Conner holds off NewCath

Conner built a 14-point lead and held off a late surge as the Cougars edged Newport Central Catholic, 21-17 on Friday.

Kyler Padgett finished 10 of 16 for 114 yards and two touchdowns to pace Conner, and he was also the team’s leading rusher with 52 yards and another score.

Joseph Warwick and Tanner Nyers caught Padgett’s TD passes. Warwick led all receivers with five catches for 79 yards.

The Thoroughbreds’ Jacob Smith rushed for a game-best 156 yards and one score on 27 carries, and he also caught two passes for 52 yards. John Harris added 112 ground yards and the other NewCath touchdown on eight rushes.

NewCath outgained Conner, 402-271, including 280-137 rushing.

The Thoroughbreds had first and goal at the Cougars’ 10 late in the fourth quarter but NewCath ended up throwing one of their three interceptions on fourth and goal from the 7 with 2:25 to play.

Conner was able to run out the clock.

The Cougars’ next game is also on the road, as Conner faces Lloyd in Erlanger. The Thoroughbreds have a bye next week before visiting Holy Cross on Oct. 9.
