Wayne dominates Centerville

HUBER HEIGHTS, Ohio – Wayne scored on the first play of the game and never looked back in a dominant 56-17 victory over rival Centerville on Friday night.

With the win, the Warriors clinched the GWOC Central championship and a home game in the Division I, Region 2 playoffs.

“The big thing for us is our offensive line, they are the key for our running game and our passing game,” Wayne quarterback Messiah DeWeaver said. “We can’t wait to find out who we play, so we can prepare for next week.”

Wayne defensive back Richard Carpenter got the scoring started quickly when he intercepted a Centerville pass and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown.

Following a Daryl McCleskey touchdown, the Warriors wrapped up the lopsided first quarter when DeWeaver scored from eight yards out, making the score 21-0.

Trailing 28-0 midway through the second quarter, the normally high-powered Elks offense finally found the end zone when quarterback Jacob Harrison connected with Colin DeBord on a 10 yard touchdown pass.

Following the touchdown, Centerville used a bit of trickery as it recovered an onside kick. Elks’ kicker Grant Tinnerman hit a 30-yard field, trimming the lead to 18, 28-10.

McCleskey would make it a hat trick as he scored twice more before halftime, giving the Warriors a commanding 42-10 lead.

Wayne would show off its impressive stable of running backs in the second half as Matt Wilcox and Antwand Wilson found the end zone on the ground, wrapping up the victory.

Wayne outgained Centerville, 487-256.

DeWeaver, who is committed to play for Michigan State, threw for 222 yards and one touchdown while adding 51 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

Harrison wraps up an impressive senior season with 138 yards passing and two touchdowns for the Elks. He will move on to play for the Naval Academy next year.

After advancing all the way to the Division I state championship game before losing to St. Edward last season, Wayne appears poised for another run at a state championship. The Warriors outscored their opponents, 413-75 this season.

“A lot of practice with the ones vs. the ones got us ready. We practice hard and have very intense practices,” DeWeaver said. “We had Moeller and Lakota West early, two great division one teams. That helped to show us what we had to work on, and we’re ready for the challenge.”

With the loss, Centerville wraps up its season with a 6-4 record.

Next week, Wayne will look to keep the momentum going when they host a first round game in the Division I, Region 2 playoffs.
