Colerain makes Media Top 25 move

Two teams from the Lakes Region of the country made significant moves this week in the Media Compilation Top 25.

Louisville Male (KY) and Colerain (Cincinnati, OH) moved to Nos. 10 and 13, respectively. The Bulldogs was a moderate three-spot climb to take to the Top 10 for the first time all season, while Colerain jumped up from No. 20 in the largest gainer of the week with its seven-spot increase.

Male has been the top-ranked team in Kentucky since blowing out Trinity (Louisville, KY) early in the year — the two will play a rematch this Friday for the de facto state championship. To get there, Male blanked DuPont Manual, 38-0.

Past Media Compilations:

Devin Gentry rushed for 201 yards — 186 in the first half before he rested along with other banged-up Bulldogs — and two touchdowns. The team also welcomed back quarterback Hayden Shelton after missing the first two playoff games with a shoulder injury.

Shelton hurt his shoulder in the season-finale against Western and — in limited action — threw for 52 yards and two scores.

Colerain was healthy for its second time taking on Cincinnati St. Xavier and having its offensive line intact and a full compliments of running backs helped the team cruise to a running clock win, 49-14.

The difference in the two contests — a 13-10 overtime contest in September to this blowout — was also the play of quarterback Deshaunte Jones.

Jones was bottled up for 53 yards on 25 carries in the first game. He broke free for 229 yards on 15 carries this past weekend as the Colerain offense piled up 502 yards of total offense on 47 carries and punched in each of the six trips to the redzone. More impressively was the team going 7-for-87 on third downs.

Jones now has 1,591 yards rushing and 26 scores on the season as part of the Cardinals option attack.

The team will still have to overcome an Elder (Cincinnati, OH) team that is getting votes in the Compilation, then No. 22 Wayne, and No. 8 St. Ed.

If it is able to make that run a Top 5 finish may be in play for a final ranking.

The Media Compilation takes into account the four most respected human polls, the top computer model, and an emerging hybrid human-algorithm to make for the best rankings in the country.

Those under consideration are the NationalHSFootball.com HSFB100; USAToday Super 25; MaxPreps Xcellent25; PrepNation Top 25; Jeff Fisher’s Top 25 and the Freeman Computer Top 25 — which is also known as the MaxPreps Computer Poll.

For a mathematically sound compilation each team is given points from 40 to 16 for being inside the Top 25 of each of those six polls with no points awarded for any additional rankings due to the differing size of each poll.

Points are assigned in decreasing value starting with 40 being awarded for No. 1 and on down to 16 for No. 25 which will result in a more accurate representation of the polls. Assigning points starting at 1 point would skew the tally in the instance that a team received a single, high placement versus a team with lower placements in multiple polls, raising the baseline eliminates the outlier impact in the compilation.

The poll will be updated and released each Tuesday of the football season.

1 (1)

235

Bishop Gorman (NV) 2 1 1 2 2 3
Bishop Gorman lost a placement point for the second week in a row as the Freeman Computer (MaxPreps Computer) moved it to the No. 3 spot in its poll — leaving the Gaels at No. 1 in only the USAToday and MaxPreps human polls — but still atop the Compilation. The Gaels continued to lay waste inside its Nevada slate with a 63-13 win over Centennial. Bishop Gorman outgained its opponent 509-184. Running back Biaggio Ali Walsh had 89 yards and three scores in nine first quarter carries before leaving just into the second frame after aggrevating a hip injury.
2 (2)

233

St. John Bosco (CA) 1 4 2 1 3 2
St. John Bosco swas up 59-0 at halftime and the starters were resting during a beating of Corona, 72-7. Quentin Davis was 8-of-12 for 200 yards and three scores — adding another rushing touchdown — in his limited time. He connected on six of those eight passes to Jared Harrel who had 165 yards and three scores. It gained two spots back in the USAToday poll — which had dropped it to No. 8 just two weeks ago — but lost the top spot in the Freeman Computer for a net gain of one this week.
3 (3)

225

Allen (TX) 3 2 4 5 1 6
Allen was up 40-0 at halftime before cruising in with a 50-14 win over Byron Nelson. Mitchell Jonke threw for 155 and two touchdowns while rushing for another touchdown. The win sets up another contest with DeSoto (TX) which could be interesting even if many have already cashed out on DeSoto this year — which may make it more dangerous. It lost two placement points in the Freeman Computer this week and likely took a hit to its chances to win human polls with Euless Trinity falling.
4 (4)

224

Centennial (CA) 5 5 3 4 4 1
JJ Taylor went off in a big way with 183 yards and seven touchdowns in a 70-29 blowout of Chaminade. The game was 42-14 at halftime and perhaps could have been closer if Chaminade had converted on a pass in the closing seconds. The Huskies scored 21 points in each of the first three quarters and moved the ball at will. Centennial moved up two spots in both the USAToday poll and the Freeman Computer to add four points this week.
5 (6)

205

Colquitt County (GA) 4 3 5 3 5 18
Colquitt jumped out to a 34-3 lead at halftime before finishing up a 48-16 win over North Paulding. Chase Parrish three for three touchdowns in the first half and added another rushing score. The tone of the game was set from the opening kick when the Packers returned it 70 yards and then punched in a touchdown a few plays later. It remained unchanged in its points from last week but moved up to No. 5 after Euless Trinity dropped from the poll.
6 (8)

198

IMG Academy (FL) 10 7 10 10 7 4
Season Complete: IMG had a solid season with quality wins over DeSoto (TX), Cocoa (FL), and a trio of New Jersey squads — Bergen Catholic (Oradell, NJ), St. Joseph (Montvale, NJ), and Paramus Catholic (NJ). It will buoy as other teams finish out the season but figures to be safe for a Top 10 finish.
7 (7)

194

De La Salle (CA) 8 8 11 7 8 10
De La Salle was idle this week. It will play California High this week. It dominated California High by the final of 56-0 two weeks ago. It lost several points this week but maintained its placement even as Euless Trinity lost.
8 (9)

177

St. Edward (OH) 14 11 16 13 6 9
St. Edward dominated play but shot itself in the foot too frequently to take advantage leading to a 13-10 score against Mentor into the fourth quarter. It pulled away for a 34-10 final and few polls took notice of its third straight struggle. Cole Gest went for 210 yards on 26 carries and his second touchdown of the game broke it open in the fourth quarter.
9 (10)

171

Katy (TX) 9 11 8 8 11
Katy pitched its fifth straight shutout in a 77-0 win over Westside to open the playoffs. It has allowed 18 total points all season and no matter the knock on its schedule that point total impresses. It will play a CyRanch team this week that made it to the Class 6A-DI finals last year and has won 10 games in a row this season. The Tigers gained five spots in the USAToday; three in the HSFB100; two each from PrepNation and Fisher Algorithm, and one at MaxPreps.
10 (13)

162

Male (KY) 16 9 12 15 12 20
Male gained entry into all five polls with the Freeman Computer placing it at No. 20 this week. Devin Gentry gained 201 yards on the ground, scoring two touchdowns, as the Bulldogs blanked Manual, 36-0. The team welcomed back quarterback Hayden Shelton from a shoulder injury just in time to knock off the rust before a showdown with Louisville Trinity.
11 (15)

123

DeMatha (MD) 19 15 18 18 13 8
DeMatha gained re-entry to the Top 25 of the HSFB100 to move back towards the Top 10 this week. The Stags offensive line played one of its best games of the season, opening up holes to pile up 333 yards rushing in a 42-21 win over St. John’s. Colton Henry stepped in for an injured Lorenzo Harrison — who gained 122 yards and scored twice in the first half — to gained 115 yards in his best performance of the season.
12 (11)

153

Chandler (AZ) 11 20 15 11 19 17
Chandler was led by its defense in a 34-14 win over Desert Vista. Transfer Hamilcar Rashed led the team with 11 tackles and a sack. It will play Desert Ridge in the semifinals for a chance to advance to another state title. It gained four spots in the USAToday and PrepNation polls as well as two each from MaxpPreps and the Fisher Algorithm.
13 (20)

152

Colerain (OH) 7 13 17 11 5
Colerain was dominant in its second playoff game, crushing previously-ranked St. Xavier, 42-14. Deshaunte Jones rushed for 229 yards and three scores on just 15 carries as Colerain piled up 527 yards of total offense. Zack Johnson had 120 yards on the ground and scored in the fourth quarter to get the game to a 42-7 running clock. It gained seven spots in the Freeman Computer; five each at MaxPreps and in the HSFB100; four from Fisher Algorithm, and into PrepNation at No. 17 from unranked last week.
14 (12)

144

Gilman (MD) 15 22 17 19 15 14
MIAA Conference A Champion: The Greyhounds went unbeaten through conference play and added wins over Good Counsel (MD) as well as Paramus Catholic (NJ). It opened the year with a tough loss to St. Edward — which it probably should have won. It will join IMG as a buoy for the last five weeks of the season.
15 (17)

142

Grayson (GA) 9 13 8 8 25
Grayson scored twice in the first three minutes and led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter. It built its lead to 38-7 before closing the last quarter and a half quickly in a 38-10 win over Wheeler. Cameryn Brent rushed for 189 yards and two scores. Demetrius Mason opened the game with a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. It gained entry into the Freeman Computer; three spots in PrepNation, and two each from the HSFB100, USAToday, and MaxPreps.
16 (18t)

123

American Heritage (FL) 20 16 9 23 14
In a downpour, the Patriots still blanked Westwood, 43-0. Quarterback Jason Brown rushed for 116 yards and two scores — throwing for 66 yards and another score. Sophomore Matt Peart added 60 yards and two scores in a game that was mostly played on the ground with the weather condition. It swapped placements in the HSFB100 and out of the Freeman Computer. It gained minimal points across the other four polls.
17 (16)

122

Ocean Lakes (VA) 17 10 6 9
Ocean Lakes opened a 42-7 lead against Western Branch on its way to a 49-21 victory. The Dolphins were trying just about everything in the game, rotating quarterbacks, getting new running backs carries, and practicing its onside kicks — which it recovered. It was a buoy, again.
18 (21)

118

Center Grove (IN) 25 25 16 10 11
Center Grove needed a double overtime escape to keep its chances for a state title intact. The team showed to be, perhaps, a team of destiny as its Wing-T was forced to pick up a third-and-17, a fourth-and-6, and another fourth-and-2 on its final drive — which went 60 yards in two minutes without a timeout — to force overtime with a field goal. Titus McCoy had 36 carries for 198 yards in the win over Avon. MaxPreps added the team to its poll this week.
19 (14)

101

Clay-Chalkville (AL) 12 23 12 16
The inconsistent play on the defensive side of the ball has kept the Cougars on a rankings yo-yo this season. It seems like each week it is a completely new unit taking the field. The team escaped with a 40-39 win over Homewood to advance to a game versus Minor. It fell out of the HSFB100 from No. 24; dropped nine within MaxPreps; three at MaxPreps, but gained a spot in the Fisher Algorithm.
20 (–)

98

Steele (TX) 24 19 20 20 24
Steele used the legs of Travell Lumpkin to pull away from MacArthur in the bidistrict of the Class 6A-DII playoffs. The Knights rolled 63-12. The rest of Region 4 doesnt appear to have enough in the tank to slow the team down and a semifinals showdown with Katy is the most likley spot for the team to encounter a serious threat. The team added three polls this week to clime from the outside, in.
21 (23)

89

St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) 21 17 20 17
The Raiders used Jaxson Kincaide and James Charles to control the ball in a 29-0 victory over Royal Palm Beach. Kincaide has 148 yards and two scores on 11 carries while Charles added 86 yards and a touchdown on his 11 touches. The defense had three sacks and an astounding 14 tackles for loss in the game. St. Thomas Aquinas gained five spots in the USAToday and Fisher Algorithm, also moving up three spots at MaxPreps. It was unchanged in the HSFB100.
22 (22)

88

Wayne (OH) 14 14 7
Wayne jumped on Springboro early and rolled to a 52-21 victory. The team could pose a threat to Colerain in the semifinals of Ohio but its merits are hard to define as the best win came in an uninspiring performance against an injured — and down — Moeller team. The six point increase inside the Freeman Computer pushed the pace for placement as it is now in the Top 10 of the computer. It added three votes from USAToday and two at PrepNation.
23 (–)

81

Lone Peak (UT) 23 21 24 15
Lone Peak took a major step forward this week as it bettered Bingham, 26-9. The Knights had more yards — both rushing and passing — and limited Bingham to just 1 of 13 on third downs in the contest. Talmage Gunther was 11-of-19 for 248 yards and three touchdowns passing. He added 77 yards on the ground as Lone Peak dominated the game. It wasn’t getting votes last week but jumped into four polls Top 25 this week.
24 (–)

77

Loyola (IL) 24 22 22 19
There was no let down for Loyola a week after blistering Stevenson it bettered the No. 2 team in the state — HSFB100-No. 52 Homewood-Flossmoor — to the tune of 34-28. The back-and-forth game was tilted with a sequence of plays that all went the way of Loyola. It should win the 8A title with ease.
25 (25)

67

Trinity Christian (FL) 13 19 24
Trinity Christian was up 14-0 early in the first quarter and then the team finished off Pensacola Catholic, 49-3. The team may be without quarterback Billy Cobb, running back Jalin Buie, and lineman Jack Lane next week as all three were ejected from the game during a scuffle on the sidelines. If the referees right up the trio they will be suspended for one game — though it won’t matter against Taylor County.
