Cooper edges Conner again

Conner quarterback Kyler Padgett was sacked on fourth down in the red zone as Cooper held off the Cougars, 14-6 in a Class 6A second-round playoff game in Union on Friday.

These teams met weeks ago and Cooper won that one as well in a game that was decided late, as the Jaguars kicked a decisive field goal to pull it out.

Byron Brown scooped up a loose ball off a muffed punt and ran it in from three years out to give Cooper a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

The score remained the same until early in the fourth quarter, when Padgett ran in a six-yard score, but the Jaguars retained a one-point lead after a missed extra point.

Cooper QB Nathan Brown hooked up with Dante Hendrix for a 36-yard strike to cap the scoring midway through the final stanza.

Jaden Jackson rushed for 147 yards in the Jaguars’ win. Brown was 5-for-10 for 60 yards and a touchdown.

Padgett finished with 206 passing yards as Conner outgained Cooper, 282-199 in the losing effort.

Cooper will host Simon Kenton in a state quarterfinal next week.
