A Look Back: ’15 Breakout Performers

In March, TriStateFootball.com gave us a peak at who they pegged as their 2015 Breakout Performers.

Here is a look backat our picks and how they fared this past season.

Nick Hall (Elder), WR: The 6-foot-4, 195 pound senior finished with one of the best receiving seasons in the history of Elder football with 80 receptions for 1,170 yards and 18 touchdowns catches. He was named Second Team All-Southwest District and GCL South WR of the Year.

Cole Hannon (Ross) RB/DB: He amassed 1,111 all-purpose yards (660 rushing) and found the end zone nine times in eight games for the Rams.

Tom MacVittie (Moeller), QB: Injuries slowed the start for MacVittie as he missed two of the Crusaders first three games. The senior caught fire the last four weeks of the year though by throwing for 1,232 and 16 touchdowns in that span, but his late-season offensive outburst failed to push Moeller into the playoffs. The Pittsburgh commit finished the year with 1,896 yards and 22 touchdowns passing.

Sawyer Klingelhoffer (Oak Hills): After being in the pre-season hunt for an Oak Hills offensive position, Klingelhoffer found a home on defense. The senior was in on 34 tackles with an interception for the Highlanders.

Cameron Specht (St. Xavier), RB: The brutal St. Xavier schedule took its toll on the 145-pound Specht down the stretch as he did not play in three of the Bombers’ final five games. It was a sophomore season that saw Specht run for 182 yards on 37 carries, snare eight receptions for 42 more yards with a pair of touchdown catches.

Jermaine Fulton (Reading), DB: The sophomore played a significant role in the secondary for the 9-2 Blue Devils. Fulton was in on 31 tackles (22 solo) with a fumble recovery and was named Honorable Mention All-CHL.

L’Christian “Blue” Smith-Cochran (Wayne), WR: He emerged as one of the best players and top recruits in the Class of 2018. Smith-Cochran caught 53 balls for 1,311 yards (24.3/rec.) and 17 touchdowns on his way to First Team All-GWOC Central accolades for the Division I state runner-up Warriors.

Corde’ Kyles (Fairmont), QB: Kyles was a non-factor the last three weeks of the season after throwing for 493 yards and running for 398 yards while accounting for 11 touchdowns (four passing, seven rushing) in the Firebirds’ first seven affairs.

Lamont Harris (Carroll), LB: He was a First Team All-GCL North selection after a junior campaign that saw the 6-foot-3, 225 pound Harris lead Carroll in tackles.

Joseph Scates (Dunbar), ATH: A very solid sophomore campaign saw Scates catch 23 passes for 364 yards, reel in six touchdown receptions, return two kickoff and an interception for scores while amassing 749 all-purpose yards for the 5-5 Wolverines

Clay Washington (Dixie), RB: Washington was limited to just 40 yards rushing over the last three weeks of ’15 after gaining 389 and all three of his touchdowns the six weeks prior. He was still named Second Team All-SWBL Buckeye for his efforts as a junior.

Nelson Perrin (Scott), QB/DB: We thought Perrin would slide into the starting quarterback for the Eagles, but instead he made his presence felt in all three phases of the game for the best team in Scott history. The sophomore was the Eagles’ top return man, second on the team in scoring with 84 points, including 13 touchdowns (11 rushing), had 1,191 yards of offense (746 rushing, 445 receiving) and was in on 19 tackles with and interception.

Austin Hergott, (Highlands), QB: After a horrendous Highlands start at 1-5, Hergott found himself right in the middle of a turnaround as the Bluebirds won seven in a row before falling to Pulaski County in the Kentucky Class 5A state semi-final. Hergott closed out his career with 1,722 yards passing and accounting for 20 touchdowns (15 passing, five rushing).

Cole Hicks (Cooper), DB: Healthy for most of his senior campaign, Hicks was in on 38 tackles with three takeaways for the 10-3 Jaguars.
