Best Bets: Week 2 – NKY/Indiana

Lightning caused games to be delayed, postponed and canceled altogether around Northern Kentucky and Indiana in Week 1.

But much better weather is forecast for Week 2, with a high in the mid-70s for Friday as Ryle and Simon Kenton both shoot for their third wins of the early season.

Here are the Best Bets for Week 2 of prep football in Kentucky:

Ryle (2-0) at Boone County (0-2), Thursday, 7 p.m. – Ryle has wins of 18 and six points and is playing its first true road game of the season (the Henry Clay game was at LexCath). Jake Chisholm is averaging over nine yards per carry and has 274 ground yards and three touchowns. Tanner Morgan’s QB line has been outstanding: 34 of 52 (65.4 percent), 448 yards, three TDs, no picks. Boone County has been held to 25 points in two games while surrendering 77.

Conner (1-0) at Simon Kenton (2-0), 7 p.m. – Conner’s season opener was last Friday, and Walker Buelow impressed mightily, going 15 of 20 for 244 yards, two touchdowns and no picks, plus he rushed for 85 yards in a 36-7 win over Boone County. Simon Kenton has scored 91 points in two games, and the QB combination of Cameron Racke and Matt Shearer have already thrown for six TDs. Dylan Hampton has rushed for four scores with 181 ground yards.

Milan (1-1) at Lawrenceburg (2-0), 7 p.m. – Milan is coming off a 19-14 loss to Batesville after beating Rushville, 33-0 in its season opener. Lawrenceburg has picked up two relatively easy wins, beating Indian Creek by 21 and Taylor by 34. The Tigers have won 12 of the last 15 meetings between these team, including a 40-34 thriller last year.

Milford (0-1) at Dixie Heights (1-0), 7 p.m. – Milford lost to former conference for Hamilton on a field goal with five seconds to begin its season last week. The Eagles were outgained in that game, 368-211, with Blake King being the only decent stats producer on offense with 57 yards and a touchdown on six carries. Dixie Heights beat up on Scott, 34-7 as the Colonels try to forget about their awful 3-9 season last year. Milford did win, 42-28 when these teams met in 2005.

South Dearborn (0-2) at Batesville (2-0), 7 p.m. – South Dearborn has been held to just 14 points in two games while allowing 68. Batesville escaped with a five-point win at Milan last week after a 21-6 victory over bigger Jennings County. The Bulldogs have won 19 times in these teams’ annual meeting the past 30 years and took down the Knights, 27-7 a year ago.

Sycamore (0-1) at Covington Catholic (1-1), 7 p.m. – Both teams are coming off thrillers. Sycamore lost to La Salle, 38-35 in overtime last week, and CovCath beat Oak Hills, 56-48. The Colonels also suffered a loss to Ryle, 31-18 in Week 0. Jake Borman threw for 319 yards on 11 of 21 passing in the Aviators’ first game, an average of 29.0 yards per completion, and a touchdown and Jonathan Malek caught three of those passes for 110 yards and one score. QB A.J. Mayer is 34 of 59 for 433 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Expect a lot of passing in this one.

Lexington Bryan Station (1-1) at Cooper (1-1), 7:30 p.m. – After Bryan Station won in overtime in Week 0, the Defenders failed to live up to their name in a 50-7 loss at Simon Kenton. Bryan Station likes to throw the ball, and Desmond Bernard is a top target, with 11 catches for 133 yards and two touchdowns in its opener. Cooper allowed 52 points in its season-opening loss to Highlands but held Newport Central Catholic to 14 points last week. At least the Jaguars’ offense has been consistent, as they have scored 42 and 45 points. Jarod Lonaker has throws for 576 yards and five touchdowns, and Dante Hendrix has caught 14 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns.

Scott County (2-0) at Highlands (1-1), 7:30 p.m. – Scott County is second in all of Class 6A with 95 points, having pulled of 27- and 29-point wins to open the season. Five different Cardinals rushers have gained over 100 yards, and six have run in touchdowns as Scott County is averaging 384 ground yards. Highlands has played two tight games, as it came back from a multiple-touchdown deficit to beat Cooper in Week 0 and lost on a last-second field goal to Campbell County last week. The Bluebirds have gained 567 rushing yards, with the majority coming from Grant Murray and Jared Pulsfort, who have scored four touchdowns each.

Somerset (2-0) at Beechwood (1-0), 7:30 p.m. – Somerset has piled up 698 rushing yards in its two wins, led by Jordan Doan’s 444 and four touchdowns. Beechwood was off in Week 0 but shut out Lloyd, 12-0 last week, allowing just 119 yards. The Tigers only managed 155 yards yards of offense, but they beat the Briar Jumpers, 48-14 last season.
