CovCath blows out Beechwood

Covington Catholic proved the past three weeks it can win the close games.

On Friday the Colonels showed they are also capable of blowing teams out.

After winning by eight, one and one in Weeks 1-3, CovCath pulled away in the second half for a 44-10 win over Beechwood at Wooten Stadium on Friday.

The teams traded field goals to open the scoring, with Beechwood putting its points on the board first in the first quarter, and CovCath following early in the second stanza.

The Colonels took the lead for the first time on a 4-yard run by Anthony Best with 3:31 left in the first half.

It was just 10-3 at the break, but Beechwood was held to zero yards of offense through the first two quarters – nine passing and minus-nine rushing. Meanwhile, CovCath gained 214 yards in the opening half, with A.J. Mayer passing for 188.

Josh Newman caught a 25-yard TD pass from Mayer just 2:26 into the third quarter, and Best returned an interception for a score just 56 seconds later.

James Davis returned the ensuing kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown, one of the Tigers’ few highlights.

The Colonels responded with three straight TDs to blow it open.

Mayer finished with 302 passing yards and three touchdowns. CovCath’s Casey McGinness rushed for 91 yards on 12 carries.

The final yardage total was 462-58 in favor of the Colonels.

CovCath, which has won four straight, heads to Columbus to face St. Francis De Sales next week. Previously-unbeaten Beecchwood will travel to Holy Cross.
