East Central runs through Spartans

CONNERSVILLE, in – The highlight of the night for the Connersville Spartans came on the first drive when Mason Sullenberger found Christopher Dudas for a 74 yard touchdown on a double reverse pass. It was the only time the Spartans scored against the starters of East Central. The Trojans blew past the Spartans 56-15.

East Central, however, was full of highlights.  Junior Logan Storie was his own personal highlight reel. The Trojan running back scored on his first two touches of the game. The first one was a 56 yard run untouched to the end zone. On the next drive, Storie took the ball 45 yards to the end zone giving him 101 yards and two scores in the first quarter.

Storie racked up 142 yards and three touchdowns in the first half for the Trojans, while adding two catches for 65 yards and a score. Storie was responsible for all four first half touchdowns by the Trojans. They led the Spartans 28-7 at the half.

Connersville suffered from the injury bug in the first half. After throwing the 74 yard touchdown, Sullenberger went down with an ankle injury and fellow running back Donovan Foreman went down with a knee injury. Starting quarterback Dalton Light left in the first quarter with an arm injury. His replacement Alec Atkins left with an injury but returned to the game. The Spartans used three quarterbacks in the first half and managed just one score to their credit.

The Trojans racked up 186 yards on the ground in the first half with Alex Maxwell adding eight yards and Jayden Williamson adding 36 in the half. Maxwell also aired the ball out 12 times, completing five of those passes for 95 yards and a score. He also threw an interception to Dalton DuBois late in the first half.

The Spartans tallied a net of 51 yards with Christian McHenry leading the way for the Spartans. McHenry had 34 yards on seven carries while Dubois had 11 yards on five carries. Sullenberger added 10 yards on two carries before going down with injury and Foreman added four yards on three carries before suffering similar fate. Through the air the Spartans added 90 yards and a score and found themselves in the deep 28-7 hole.

Storie, however, wasn’t done in the second half. He carried the ball just three more times but added two scores and 124 yards in the third quarter. He ended the game with 272 yards and five rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown. He was joined on the ground with Maxwell, who added a 61 yard score and Nathan Carle popped in a three yard touchdown of his own. The Trojans added 252 yards on the ground in the second half giving them 438 rushing yards on 28 carries, an average of more than 15 yards per attempt.

Meanwhile the Spartans added another score late in the ball game on the legs of Dubois who had to pick up the slack from the injuries. The junior, in addition to being the kicker, punter, kick returner, and cornerback also carried the load in the second half. He carried the ball 16 times for 68 yards and the score. He ended the game with 79 yards on 21 attempts.

East Central’s victory sealed up their EIAC title this season. Next week they are in action on the road against Greensburg before ending the regular season at home against Indianapolis Bishop Chatard. The Spartans are also on the road as they head south to Lawrenceburg to play the Tigers before ending their regular season at home against Batesville.
