CovCath pulls away from Dixie Heights

It took three quarters, but the home standing Covington Catholic Colonels finally took control and knocked off arch-rival Dixie Heights 35-12 in a Friday night contest in Park Hills.

Senior running back Anthony Best scored twice to lead CovCath to their first district title since 2006. Covington Catholic led 14-12 at the half, and the score remained there after three after the two teams battled to a stalemate in the third quarter.

CovCath (3-0 district, 7-2 overall) pulled away in quick strike fashion early in the fourth quarter. The first touchdown came on the first play of the final period when junior quarterback A.J. Mayer hit senior running back Grant Dyer to make it 21-12 CovCath.

Following a Dixie Heights (2-1, 5-4) turnover, CovCath extended the lead to 28-12 when Best took it in from the 5. Junior linebacker Kameron Butler capped off the scoring on the ensuing Dixie possession when he returned an interception to the house to make it 35-12 CovCath, and sealing their first district title in ten years.

CovCath did get off to a fast start, going up 7-0 when sophomore running back Casey McGinness went 62 yards on a jet sweep on the game’s second play. Dixie hung tough in the first half, thanks in large part to 160 rushing yards.

CovCath, coming off their first win over Highlands in ten years, will host 6-A power Scott County next Friday night in Park Hills, while Dixie Heights will travel to Union to also take on a 6-A power in unbeaten Ryle in both team’s regular season finales.

Both sets of Colonels will be at home the following week in the first round of the Kentucky 5-A playoffs.
