Roundup: Dayton – Week 8

The strong are showing their might as the best squads begin to get into playoff mode. The train is really rolling for several schools. Alter, Franklin, Benjamin Logan, Indian Lake and Wayne all remain unbeaten. Trotwood-Madison has won seven straight. Carlisle dropped its first two and has been victorious in its six contests since. Piqua, Belmont and Dunbar are on five game winning streaks.

Here is a look at Week 8 in the Dayton area:

Piqua-ing up the pieces: A season ending injury to top running back Darien Tipps-Clemons left Piqua (6-2, 3-0) struggling to find its identity at 1-2. The Indians have regrouped to win five in a row after Friday’s 36-26 victory over Butler (4-4, 1-2). They have won those affairs by an average margin of 30.8 points. Allen Schrubb and Ben Schmiesing have picked up the slack in the running attack with Clemons out. Schrubb has run for 571 yards and 15 touchdowns during the clubs current win streak. Schmiesing has added 410 yards and five scores on the ground in that same span.

Tischler a two-way star: Springboro (6-2, 1-0) senior Tyler Tischler recorded his fourth 100-yard receiving game of the season as the Panthers pounded Fairborn (1-7, 1-1) 66-42. It was also the third consecutive two touchdown catch performance. On the season Tischler has 42 receptions for 624 yards with nine trips to the end zone. On defense, he has a GWOC best five interceptions.

A soaring Skyhawk: Fairborn’s future looks bright with freshman quarterback Garison Secrest. Inserted into the lineup in Week 4 the youngster has gone on to throw for 11 touchdowns and 945 yards including a career high 302 yards and four scoring tosses in Friday’s loss to Springboro. He is just one of two GWOC quarterbacks (Brody Mahle, Springboro) to have thrown for four touchdown passes in a game, twice this season.

Shelton shows off: Centerville (3-5, 1-0) got a big night out of receiver Donovan Shelton as the Elks won a thriller over Northmont (3-5, 0-1), 24-23. The junior racked up 233 all-purpose yards and had a career best six receptions for 126 yards and a touchdowns in the victory. Shelton has accomplished the feat twice in the last four weeks.

Falcons find footing: Fenwick (4-4, 4-1) has won three in a row after a 1-3 start. Linebacker Brady Davenport has been a force for the defense. The junior had a pair of key interceptions and 117 return yards on those picks as the Falcons handled Purcell Marian (3-5, 1-4). He also has two-and-a-half sacks during the team’s modest winning streak.

Erbe has valiant effort: It was quite the Friday night for Oakwood (2-6, 2-2) quarterback Brian Erbe as the lumberjacks lost a nail-biter to Valley View (7-1, 3-1), 42-41. The junior threw for 432 yards and accounted for six touchdowns (four passing, two rushing) in defeat. He has tossed at least three touchdown passes in Oakwood’s last four contests.

40 or more for Franklin: Behind season high 63 point outburst Franklin (8-0, 4-0) stayed unblemished as they beat Monroe (2-6, 2-3). The Wildcats have scored 50 points or more in three straight tilts with five in a row of at least 40 points. Franklin did not score more than 30 points in its first three victories.
