NKY Friday Round-Up: CovCath Crusies

Friday night brought second-round playoff action to the Kentucky high school gridiron. The temperatures are starting to dip, but the action is heating up. Here’s a look at a few of the games that unfolded in Week 12.

COVCATH 48, LOUISVILLE DOSS 21
Fans that showed up late to Wooten Stadium on Friday night, missed plenty of fireworks as the Covington Catholic Colonels (9-3) put 21 first-quarter points on the scoreboard and never looked back as they rolled Doss, 48-21.

CovCath (9-3) quarterback AJ Mayer accounted for three of the team’s touchdowns. He threw for 144 yards and a score and made his way in the end zone twice on runs of 1 and 36 yards while finishing with 45 yards rushing in the win.

Next up, the Colonels head to Louisville to face Fern Creek next Friday night.

FERN CREEK 39, DIXIE HEIGHTS 6
The 2016 campaign came to an end on Friday night for the Dixie Heights Colonels as they fell on the road to Fern Creek, 39-6.

Dixie Heights (6-6) couldn’t get much going and fell down quickly when they gave of a 79-yard passing touchdown in the game’s opening minute. The Tigers dominated in the passing game, completing five of seven passes for 141 yards.

Fern Creek will cost CovCath next week.

HOLY CROSS 13, WALTON-VERONA 10
The Holy Cross Indians got down by 10 points early, but would go on to score 13 unanswered points to knock off the Walton-Verona Bearcats in Class 2A playoff action.

Holy Cross (9-3) was led by running backs Xavier Abernathy and Derrick Barnes. Abernathy carried the ball 20 times for 78 yards. Barnes tallied 99 yards on 13 totes. Both players rushed for a touchdown.

The win sets up a matchup next week for the Indians with NewCath for the regional title.
