Third quarter outburst powers Simon Kenton

The second-round Class 6A matchup between the Simon Kenton Pioneers and the Campbell County Camels on Friday night at Chlorine Menefee Stadium was close early on, but Simon Kenton (11-1) outscored their foes 29-0 in the third quarter to advance with a 57-14 victory.

Campbell County (4-8) got on the board on their first drive with a TD by with 4:10 left in the first quarter.

The Pioneers didn’t waste much time though before responding when they scored less than one minute later and after a two-point conversion they led 8-7.

Both teams would add a second quarter touchdown, including a TD by the Camels as time was expiring in the first half. With things knotted up 14-14 at the half the contest was very much in doubt.

The doubt wouldn’t last long. Simon Kenton put their first points on the board quickly in the third quarter and would find the end zone three more times before the frame would end. The Pioneers added two more scores late to pull away.

Luke Vance had a night to remember, finding the end zone four times and registering 211 total yards to pace the Pioneers. The Simon Kenton defense did their part too, coming away with three interceptions.

Quarterback Cam Racke completed 6-of-10 passes for 159 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Teammate Matt Shearer threw for 126 yards and two more scores. Senior Dylan Hampton tallied 149 yards and score of his own on 15 carries.

Next up, Simon Kenton will host Lafayette next Friday night in the round of eight in KHSAA Class 6A playoff action.
