Simon Kenton rides Seger’s leg to a 22-14 win

Ft. Mitchell, KY – The Simon Kenton Pioneers knocked off the Beechwood Tigers 22 – 14 on Friday night at Edgar McNabb Field.

Simon Kenton was held well below its usual scoring output and had to rely on a strong defensive effort to secure the victory.

The Pioneers averaged 53 points in their previous three games before being held to just 22 points and they were also held to 349 total yards which is 82 yards below their season average.

“We didn’t play our best tonight but making big plays is the most important thing you can do,” said senior defensive back Brayden Trattles.

Trattles did just that as he had a big interception on the Beechwood 32 yard line with five minutes to go just after his team had taken the lead.

That interception along with a fumble recovery by senior linebacker Justin Sabie were the difference in this game.

Sabie’s fumble recovery came in the end zone on a second and goal from the one yard line in the first half with the Tigers leading 7 – 0 at the time.

“Our defense played big, you had that takeaway and the Trattles takeaway where he came up big and those things always make differences in ball games,” said head coach Jeff Marksberry.

Beechwood was able to move the football in the first half at times with 157 yards at halftime but ended the game with just 256 total yards, netting only 99 second half yards.

The Tiger offense was paced by senior running back James Davis who finished the game with 102 yards and both of Beechwood’s touchdowns.

Simon Kenton was led by Matt Shearer who passed for 187 yards and ran for an additional 77 yards and both Pioneer touchdowns.

Simon Kenton showed off another weapon in its arsenal in junior kicker Christian Seger who hit three field goals on the night after making just one in his team’s previous six contests.

“Christian came through big for us tonight he’s got some skills and he can really kick the football and it’s nice for us to know that he’s dependable and can get us three points,” said Marksberry.

On top of being the kicker for the Pioneers Seger is also the leading goal scorer for Simon Kenton’s soccer team.

“A lot of people say it’s really different but I just kick the ball the same, all my soccer friends say that’s why I shank some kicks over the net,” said Seger.

In the end this is a game that will benefit both teams as Beechwood has shown that they can play with a very good team that has much greater numbers than anyone they will face in the post season and Simon Kenton gets the win while also having to play until the final snap for a second straight week to stay unbeaten.

“I like the fact that our kids have responded two weeks in a row to pull victories out when we could have just as easily lost,” said Marksberry.
