Sky Kings! Aviators soar past Mason again

CINCINNATI, ohio – In the Battle for the Skies bragging rights, it was the Sycamore Aviators that brilliantly navigated their way past the Mason Comets. In a game that had become a Greater Miami Conference regular season finale staple the two schools opened up league play this season. For the third time in the last eight games it was Sycamore who had the Comets number.
The Aviators had to overcome adversity in the victory. Starting quarterback Drew Altemuehle was lost to an injury on the team’s second offensive series. Senior receiver Jonathan Malek moved into the position and ran a wildcat version of the Sycamore offense like a poised veteran.
Malek got the scoring started when he hooked up with classmate Myron Williams on a pair of touchdown passes from seven and 53 yards out in the second quarter. That was all the cushion the home team would need.

A stellar defensive effort by Sycamore saw them hold the Comets star running back Matt Sora to just 47 yards rushing on 14 carries. It was the third time in four career games that Sora had failed to reach the 100-yard mark versus the Aviators.
To make matters worse for Mason was their inability to move the ball through the air. Sycamore came up with three interceptions on the night. Any thoughts of the Comets making a comeback were constantly squashed. It was just tough to move the chains for the visitors who were a combined 2-13 on third and fourth down conversion attempts.
Jordan McConnell ran for fourth quarter touchdown which put Sycamore up 21-0. The statement had been made. The Aviators are legit.
A “zig-zaggy, Fran Trakenton-esque” scoring scramble by Mason quarterback Jake Harris ended the Aviators quest for a third straight shutout with just 69 seconds left in the contest. It took that kind of effort for everyone to really appreciate what the Sycamore defense has accomplished up to this point of the season.
Malek finished the night with 98 yards passing and 60 more rushing. Williams hauled in three receptions for 89 yards and the pair of scores for the winners.
