Centerville secures top seed in playoffs

On the last Friday in October, the Centerville Elks shut out Beavercreek, 26-0, on a wet senior night.

The weather did not stop Grandin from connecting on 15 passes for 255 yards and three touchdowns. All three of his touchdown passes were to senior Jake Spiewak. Spiewak caught an 18-yard score in the first quarter, a 68-yard connection in the third quarter, and the third score was a 25-yard pass in the fourth quarter. The senior receiver finished the game with 148 yards. He finishes with 964 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

Beavercreek came into the game as the second best defensive team in the conference, averaging only 221-plus yards per game, but Grandin and company were able to gain 409 yards and made 22 first downs.

The Beavers came in as one of the best offenses, but were held to just 83 yards and committed two turnovers.  Senior Kaden Wenger came into the week third in the conference in rushing yards, but finished the game with only 24 yards. They have been averaging over 322 yards of rushing per game, but only rushed for 62 yards on 35 carries. That averages to just under two yards per carry.

The win for Centerville will most likely lockup the top seed in Region 3 of the Division playoffs that start next week. They will host a home game against Reynoldsburg or Hillard Darby. They were matched up against GWOC rival Springfield, but the loss to Fairmont Friday night could keep Springfield out of the playoffs.

Beavercreek lost four of its last five games after opening the season with five straight wins. A win over Centerville might have pushed them into the playoffs, but instead will fail to make the postseason.
