Winton Woods rolls into championship game

It didn’t start out like they planned, but for Winton Woods on Friday night it was all about how they finished.

The Warriors found themselves down 21-0 early in the second quarter against to the Massillon Tigers on Friday night at DeSales High School in the Division II state semi-finals, but they would rally to score 56 unanswered points in a 56-21 victory.

On the very first play of the game Winton Woods (13-1) threw an interception. Two plays later they watched Massillon connect on a 67-yard TD pass. Next it would be a blocked field goal that would be returned for a touchdown. Then a 50-yard score on flea flicker play to make it 21-0.

Quarterback Kenny Mayberry finally put Winton Woods on the board with a 15-yard TD pass to Navar Gannaway with 4:47 left in the half.

Cornell Beachem would cut the lead to seven when he returned a muffed punt 42 yards and that made it 21-14 at the half.

After the break it was all Warriors. Beachem had another big punt return which set up Winton Woods in an ideal spot and Beachem finished it off with a 5-yard rushing touchdown to knot the game at 21. He finished with three total touchdowns and had 41 rushing yards on six carries and 84 punt return yards to boot.

The defense came up big too, including a 52-yard pick six by Chris Oats which gave Winton Woods the lead for good with 7:26 left in the third quarter.

The Warriors would go on to score four more times in the blowout win.

Next they’ll face Hoban (13-1) on Thursday night at 7:30 PM EDT at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.
