Round-Up: NKY 2A

By Dan Clasgens | Managing Editor

Dexter Smith threw a pair of touchdowns to lead Lloyd past Walton-Verona.

The Lloyd Juggernauts avenged a 42-14 loss earlier in the season by knocking the Walton Verona Bearcats 13-0 in the opening round of the Class 2A playoffs on Friday night.

Lloyd (5-6) got a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes by junior quarterback Dexter Smith and a stellar effort from its defense as they shutdown Walton-Verona’s (8-3) high-powered rushing attack.

Neither team picked up a first down in the first ten minutes of the game as the first five possessions of the game resulted in three-and-outs. After both teams had penalties take down second-quarter touchdowns along with a failed fake field goal attempt and a missed field goal by Walton-Verona, the contest remained scoreless at the half.

Junior defensive back Tyler York made big plays all night, including a pair of sacks and a blocked punt that set up the Juggernauts first score.

After the block Lloyd took over on their 44-yard line. Smith led them down the field, but things stalled in the red zone. Facing a 4th-and-3 from the Bearcats’ 11-yard line the junior connected with Mitchell Brooks for an 11-yard TD pass.

Following a three-and-out by Walton-Verona, Smith engineered a 65-yard scoring drive that ended with him finding Quentin Nunn in the left corner for a 6-yard touchdown.

Brooks came up an interception on the ensuing possession to seal the deal and send the Juggernauts on to the second round.

Smith finished the night by completing 18-of-33 passes for 195 yards and two scores while adding 54 more yards on the ground. Lloyd enjoyed a 259-to-135 advantage in total yards for the game.

NEWCATH 56, GALLATIN COUNTY 0 – Playing without injured quarterback Brady Hightchew the Thoroughbreds began their quest for a repeat by shutting out Gallatin County, 56-0. Junior running back Dylan Hayes rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Backup quarterback Josh Cain passed for 193 yards and two scores and rushing touchdown.

OWEN COUNTY 38, NEWPORT 13 – The Rebels picked up their 11th win of the season in impressive fashion by taking care of the Wildcats at home. They remain one of only three unbeaten teams left in Class 2A in the entire state.

HOLY CROSS 68, CARROLL COUNTY 0 – Holy Cross pitched their second straight shutout and disposed of Carroll County with ease. The Indians have now outscored their last two opponents 109-0.
