The Holy Cross Indians picked up their biggest win in school history by beating the defending Class 2A state champions, the NewCath Thoroughbreds, and earning a berth in the state semi-finals for the first time ever as they won 24-21 in a thriller.
Holy Cross (10-3) enjoyed a big night from quarterback Kyle Fuller, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for another. The Indians’ defense continued to do its part as well. The unit pitched three straight shutouts entering the game and slowed down a NCC offense that entered the game averaging 40.6 points.
The Indians struck first blood when Fuller connected with running back Jalen Beal on a 60-yard screen pass to grab a 7-0 lead.
NewCath (11-2) responded with a 55-yard by Nick Wolterman to tie the game, but it wouldn’t last long as Fuller answered with a 7-yard rushing TD and the first quarter ended with Holy Cross on top 13-7.
Both defenses pitched shutouts during the second quarter before the Thoroughbreds took a 14-13 lead in the third quarter behind a 30-yard rushing touchdown by Brady Hightchew.
Senior wide receiver Eric Walker pulled in his 16th receiving touchdown of the year early in the fourth quarter though and after a successful two-point conversion the Indians retook the lead at 21-14.
Refusing to give up, NCC rallied again as Hightchew connected with Nick Franzen from 32 yards out to tie the game.
Fuller would lead the Indians down the field on the game’s final drive. He would ultimately win the game with his foot as he booted a 32-yard field goal with just 10 seconds left in the game to give Holy Cross a three-point victory.
Holy Cross now is set to host Somerset (9-4) next week with a berth to the Class 2A state championship game on the line.
