On their quest for a sixth straight championship the Highlands Bluebirds have a shot at running the table again. There shot may even better than years past as there isn’t any opponent on Highlands’ schedule that they aren’t capable of beating.
The Bluebirds first two foes, Boyle County and Scott County, were a combined 23-5 last season with all the losses coming to state champions or runner-ups.
A week off following those tilts leaves Western and Mason County as tune-ups for their district opener against CovCath.
After the midway point, the schedule really favors the Bluebird as they close with Elder at home and Ryle on the road. Both should prove to be great tune-ups both mentally and physically to help build toughness for another deep post-season run.
Here is a look at Highlands 2012 schedule:
Fri - 08/17/12 – BOYLE COUNTY - 7:30PM
Fri - 08/24/12 – vs. Scott County (location TBA) - 7:30PM
Fri - 09/07/12 - @Louisville Western - 7:30PM
Fri - 09/14/12 – MASON COUNTY - 7:30PM
Fri - 09/21/12 – COVINGTON CATHOLIC – 7:00PM
Fri - 09/28/12 – @Harrison County - 7:30PM
Fri - 10/05/12 – PENDLETON COUNTY - 7:00PM
Fri - 10/12/12 – HOLMES - 7:00PM
Fri - 10/19/12 – ELDER - 7:30PM
Fri - 10/26/12 – @Ryle - 7:30PM
FINAL TAKE: At some point Highlands will need to get through CovCath twice in order to be district and state champions again. If they can fend off the Colonels after handling Boyle County and Scott County early on hardware should be returning to Fort Thomas. Everything lines up for them to get better, healthier and stronger down the stretch. Elder always poses problems, but the point where the Bluebirds get the Panthers in late October is very much to their advantage.
