College of Mount St. Joseph head coach Rod Huber is heading to Africa. He will join forces with Chicago Bears defensive end Amobi Okoye to teach American football to youths through several camps of a 10-day visit.
The pair had met at camps here in the states previously and when Okoye asked Huber, who is director of several events each summer for the NFL, to help out in his native Nigeria the Lions coach roared at the chance.
They will conduct camps in three different cities during their stay.
The Amobi Okoye Foundation has a global initiative C.A.T.E. (Changing Africa Through Education) which promotes academics through athletics, provides scholarships, free medical clinics, educational support, and fitness education to support achievement and excellence amount youth in developing nations.
This the fourth trip to Nigeria for C.A.T.E. to teach the kids football. They also hope to build a prep school that excels in both athletics and academics.
Huber has been with the College of Mount St. Joseph football program since its inception in 1990. When he took over as head coach 13 years ago the program had hit its lowest low losing 19 in a row between 2000 and 2002. He turned the Lions around with five NCAA tournament appearances in six years and has gone 70-45 overall at the helm.
We caught up with the infectious “Coach Hubie” to talk about his trip, his program and recruiting at his little piece of heaven on the west side of Cincinnati.
