Preview: Dixie Heights at Boone County

By Greg Shoemaker | Featured Analyst

Sophomore quarterback Drew Moore is a big part of Dixie Heights plans for the future.

The KISS107 Tailgate Tour makes its way to Owen Hauck Stadium for the opening week of Class 6A play in Northern Kentucky as the Boone County Rebels welcome the Dixie Heights Colonels.

Both teams are going through “rebuilding years” as the two have combined for a single win in 2012, but the lumps taken early in the season could pay big dividends in district action and getting off to a 1-0 start is a step in the right direction.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: The future looks bright at Dixie Heights, but right now the youngsters are still learning on the job. Underclassmen Joe Radenhausen, Seth Capel, Darrion Washington, quarterback Drew Moore, and receiver Andrew Hedger have had bright moments with many more to come. Moore is becoming an asset with his arm and his legs as the Colonels are averaging 27 points over their last two games.

Jesse Schulze has moved under center for Boone County as the team looks to improve on its offensive output that has averaged less than nine points per contest the last four weeks. Freshman Thad Moss is beginning to make his presence felt as a receiver. Like Dixie Heights, the Rebels have great days ahead with Mustafa Diaw, Casey Boston, Aaron Floyd, Jerry Marshall and Jamar Lamb all being very talented underclassmen.

TEAM TRENDS: Dixie Heights has won the last two games in this series. Boone County took seven straight over the Colonels before that dating all the way back to 2004. Since 2001 the teams have met every year including twice in 2004-05. The Rebels holds a 9-4 advantage over their rival during the span.

DIXIE HEIGHTS’ KEYS TO VICTORY: This is a game that Dixie Heights can really build a foundation on moving into October. The Colonels are seeking their second win in three games against a quality foe. That fact coupled with the possibility of being 1-0 inside the District should be enough to keep head coach Dave Brossart’s squad focused. There is plenty of good to come out of winning Friday night and it all starts with the will to do so on the field.

BOONE COUNTY’S KEYS TO VICTORY: The second season starts tonight for Boone County. The next goal is to win the District. The Rebels can take a step toward that goal if they play not to lose and have some fun from the onset of the game. Keeping a high energy and giving 100 percent on every down will create much-needed opportunities for a win.

PREDICTION: DIXIE HEIGHTS 22, BOONE COUNTY 20
