A tough start for EIAC 3A
- Updated: August 22, 2015
The first week of the season didn’t fare so well for the four teams that make up the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference 3A division. Batesville was the only squad to come out victorious. Here is a look at the first week of play in the EEIAC 3A division.
For the fourth straight season and 11th time in the last 12 seasons Batesville (1-0) took down Jennings County (0-1) in Week 1. With the game tied at 13-13 in the second quarter the Bulldogs grabbed the lead on a Jake Gerstbauer touchdown run. Jacob Koehne added another touchdown run in the third quarter to give Batesville its biggest advantage at 14 points. The Bulldogs would prevail 33-20 when it was all said and done. Milan visits Batesville on Friday night.
Milan (0-1) jumped out to an 18-point halftime lead and never looked back defeating Rushville (0-1), 37-21. It was the eighth straight season that the Indians have opened the season with a win. Juniors Keith Yager and Jacob Wilson paced the Lions offense. Yager threw for 194 yards and two touchdowns while Wilson ran for 133 yards and a score. New Castle (0-1) who fell by a point to Franklin County is next for Rushville.
A valiant Greensburg (0-1) comeback effort fell short as rival Shelbyville (0-1) came into Shriver Field and eked out a 34-33 victory. The Pirates drew to within one-point on Drew Foster to Zach Pokryzwinski touchdown pass with 47 seconds left in the contest. It would Golden Bears Jarrett Mohr’s second block extra point to preserve the victory for the visitors. Devin Ruble found the endzone three times and Foster had two touchdown passes for Greensburg. The Pirates will head to Jennings County next Friday night.
Lawrenceburg (0-1) found out early what it takes to be the best team in Indiana. New Palestine (0-1) the state’s reigning Class 3A state champion picked up where they left off a year ago handling the Tigers, 56-14 in a road win. The Dragons scored 54 points or more on 10 occasions last fall on their way to the title. Lawrenceburg travels east over the border to face a very Taylor team in “Route 50 Rumble” next Friday.
