Best Bets: Cincinnati – Week 5

Conference play begins in the GCL South, with Moeller hosting St. Xavier, and multiple league matchups in other conferences pit top rivals against each other.

The MVC also opens its schedule this week, with Summit Country Day and Cincinnati Country Day facing off in their first conference game.

TriStateFootball takes at look at Best Bets for Week 5 in Cincinnati:

Alter (3-1) at Roger Bacon (3-1) – In a league known for balanced offenses, Alter is a throwback, having passed for fewer than 100 yards this season. The Knights average 6.6 yards per carry, led by Andy Turpin’s 330 ground yards and five TDs. A 24-0 loss to Fenwick broke up Alter’s three-game winning streak last week. Jordan Williams is pacing Roger Bacon in rushing yards with 235, as the Spartans have four rushers over 150 yards. Roger Bacon also suffered its first loss last week, 49-13 against Badin.

GlenEste

Glen Este (4-0) at Turpin (4-0) – Both teams extended their winning streaks to four last week in thrilling games. Glen Este edged Loveland, 48-45 in overtime, and Turpin survived, 20-16 vs. Kings. Trojans QB Tyler Pilcher easily leads the ECC in passing yards with 990, with Jacob Hamilton accounting for a conference-best 441 of them receiving. Turpin’s Bennie Stoll has thrown for 670.

La Salle (4-0) at Northwest (4-0) – La Salle’s only in-state opponent this season to this point was Colerain, and the Lancers won, 39-36. They are averaging 41.5 points per game, thanks largely to RB Jeremy Larkin’s 615 rushing yards and nine TDs. Northwest has also been an offensive juggernaut, tallying an average of 41.0 points. QB Brandon Shelton has been very efficient for the Knights, going 29 of 50 for 500 yards, eight scores and no interceptions.

Madeira (3-1) at Reading (4-0) – The second week of CHL play will have serious league implications, with Mariemont also playing Indian Hill. Madeira has held its opponents to 11.8 points per game, and Nicholas Cedillo already has three interceptions to pace that unit. Reading has used a running back-by-committee approach, with three rushers gaining over 200 yards, and the team has not allowed more than 12 points in any game.

Reed-Aicholz-IndianHill

Mariemont (3-1) at Indian Hill (4-0) – Mariemont started 3-0 before dropping a 28-14 decision to Taylor last week. QB Joey Kromer threw for 229 yards last week and has 561 on the year. Speaking of quarterbacks, Indian Hill’s Reed Aichholz has already thrown for 1,043 yards, and the three top receivers in the CHL in terms of yardage all hail from the Braves.

Mason (2-2) at Fairfield (4-0) – Mason opened GMC play with a 21-7 loss to Colerain last week, and its other loss was by three points to Columbus Upper Arlington. Bryson White is averaging 7.3 yards per carry, having gained 344 yards on the ground for the Comets. Fairfield quarterback Hunter Krause is 52-for-79 for 845 yards and nine touchdowns.

Middletown (2-2) at Colerain (3-1) – Middletown is the last team to beat Colerain in a GMC game, and that was seven years ago. Vincent Calhoun leads the Middies’ run-heavy offense with 311 rushing yards and seven scores. Colerain’s only loss was by three points to La Salle on Sept. 11. The Cardinals’ Monalo Caldwell has rushed for 486 yards.

St. Xavier (3-1) at Moeller (2-2) – This is the first game on the GCL South slate. St. Xavier suffered a 13-10 overtime loss to Colerain and is still averaging 39.3 points per game. Sean Clifford has completed 66.7 percent of his passes (48 of 72) for 593 yards, eight touchdowns and just one pick. St. Xavier has allowed just 144.5 yards per game – 65 yards rushing and 79 passing. Moeller is averaging 182 passing yards and 134 rushing. QB Tom MacVittie missed two games, but he went 22-for-33 for 266 yards and two TDs last week in a loss to Don Bosco Prep (N.J.).

Tom-MacVittie-Moeller

Summit Country Day (2-2) at Cincinnati Country Day (4-0) – After a 2-0 start, Summit Country Day has lost to Reading (17-7) and Miami Valley Christian (35-30). Cincinnati Country Day is averaging 39.0 points per game, as three of its wins have been blowouts, plus a 42-41 win over Pleasant. CCD won, 24-14 last year when these teams played.
