Centerville finally wins close one

LEBANON, Ohio – After losing its first two games by a combined four
points, Centerville came out on top in yet another close game,
defeating Lebanon 40-35 on Friday night at James Van De Grift Stadium.

“When you play Division I football in Ohio, you play the schedule
that we do, wins are tough to come by,” Centerville head coach Rodney
Roberts said. “We’ve had a tough couple first weeks. Some of the young
guys on defense rose up and made a couple of plays for us. That was
the difference, tonight we made those plays against a very resilient
and a very good Lebanon football team.”

The Elks came up big twice on fourth down with less than five minutes
remaining in the game. Trailing late in the game, Lebanon failed to
convert a fourth down from the Centerville 23 yard line. On the
ensuing drive, the Elks sealed the victory after converting a fourth
and one from the Lebanon 46-yard line.

“That’s what we haven’t done in the first two games, so that’s a step
in the right direction,” Roberts said.

Centerville started the scoring on its second possession when running
back Dominic Ashburn scored from seven yards out.

The Warriors answered later in the quarter, tying the score at seven on
a 3 yard run by running back Dawson Wolf.

With his team leading 21-14 late into the second quarter, Ashburn came
up big again, blocking a Lebanon punt. Linebacker Adam Hensley scooped
up the loose ball and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown.

On the ensuing kickoff, Lebanon’s Mitch Turpin found a hole and
scrambled down to Centerville’s 20. Quarterback Dakota
Alllen connected with Cody Brown to make the score 27-21 at halftime.

Centerville scored the winning touchdown late in the third quarter
when quarterback Jacob Harrison found Tim Krapfel for a 51-yard
touchdown.

Harrison, a transfer from Chaminade-Julienne, finished with 103 yards
passing, 86 yards rushing, and three total touchdowns.

“Jacob is just a winner, he’s got a lot of moxie about him. Jacob is
going to be successful at whatever he does, and whatever system he’s
in,” Roberts said. “Sometimes I have to remind him that we’re not
asking you to be Superman, we just want you to do your job. He’s a
winner and he wants to win, and we’re happy to have him.”

Dakota Allen racked up 172 yards passing, 139 yards rushing, and three
total touchdowns.

The Warriors outgained the Elks, 400-294. The key stats for Centerville
were forcing two turnovers while committing zero, along with
converting 2 of 3 fourth downs.

Centerville faces another difficult test next week when it hosts
undefeated Trotwood-Madison. Lebanon will look to bounce when it hosts
Greenville.
