Mason erases 3-TD deficit vs. W. Woods
- Updated: September 11, 2015
After falling behind 21-0 early, visiting Mason (2-1) took advantage of two pick-sixes and a kickoff return touchdown to rally for a 41-27 win at Winton Woods (1-2) Friday night.
The Warriors jumped out to a 21-0 lead behind two Jalen Lumkin touchdown runs, and a Kenny Mayberry touchdown pass to Kenny Mabrey from 52-yards out early in the second quarter.
The Comets’ offense woke up late in the first half when DeAngelo Simmons hooked up with Bryson White on a touchdown pass covering 73 yards with 3:51 left in the half, and seized momentum right before halftime on a 24-yard Matt Sora rushing touchdown to make it 21-14 at the break.
After a pick-six right after halftime by junior Gabe Yarber to even things up, Mason took its first lead of the night with 1:07 left in the third quarter on a James Grace 17-yard touchdown run. However, the Comets missed the extra point. The Warriors tied the game at 27 early in the fourth on a 4th-and-goal pass from Mayberry to Lumkin from the 4, but they also missed their extra point.
On the ensuing kickoff, Nick Pearson went 81-yards to make it 34-27 with 9:11 left, a lead Mason would never relinquish. The Comets sealed the win when Will Adams picked off a Mayberry pass and took it back 53 yards to pay dirt to close out the scoring.
Mason only totaled 212 yards of offense on the night, but was able to overcome that thanks to the kickoff return and Winton Woods turnovers.
Mason opens Greater Miami Conference play at home next Friday when Colerain visits Atrium Stadium, while Winton Woods will host unbeaten Toledo Start.
