Roundup: Cincinnati – Week 5
- Updated: September 26, 2015
MVC Gray, Feeling Blue – At the halfway point of the regular season only Dayton Christian (4-1, 1-0) is the only Miami Valley Conference Scarlet Division team that has a winning record. The Warriors came into the year having gone 3-17 over the previous two seasons.
CCD Streak at 27 – Cincinnati Country Day (5-0) ran its regular season winning streak to 27 games after handling Summit Country Day, 41-7. Here are some facts about the streak. The Indians last loss was to the Silver Knights, 41-7 on October 12th, 2012. The CCD offense has held 20 victims to 14 points or fewer, 14 to eight or less with six shutouts. The CCD offense has scored 30 points or more 20 times, 40 or more on 15 occasions and 50 plus in four affairs. Heading into this season only four of 22 teams that the Indians had beaten finished the season with winning records. A quirky schedule has seen Cincinnati Country Day avoid MVC league rival CHCA who saw a 24-game regular season winning streak end earlier this year.
Sycamore 35, Lakota East 31
In a must-win situation to keep its playoff hopes alive Sycamore (2-3, 1-1) gutted out a tough triumph over Greater Miami Conference rival Lakota East (3-2, 1-1). Quarterback Jake Borman threw for a career high three touchdowns and two third quarter scoring runs by Ra’Von Bonner gave the Aviators a cushion for a bumpy but successful landing. Bonner finished the game with 167 yards rushing. It was his six consecutive start with at least 100 yards and two or more touchdowns on the ground. As for East they have to face to face a gauntlet, first at Mason then Fairfield and Colerain. The Thunderhawks season will be made over the next three weeks.
The Pressure Coker – Woodward running back Will Coker ran for 322 yards and four touchdowns in the Bulldogs 44-36 loss to Belmont (4-1, 1-0) on Friday night. It was the second straight week in which the senior topped the 300-yard mark on the ground. He averaging more than 16 yards per carry over the last two weeks.
Reading Relies on Defense – The unbeaten Reading Blue Devils (5-0, 2-0) have gotten to this point behind a stingy defense. Reading has allowed just 50 points on the year and no more than 17 in a game. Friday night’s win over Madeira (3-2, 1-1) was a huge step in becoming one of the Cincinnati Hills League’s upper echelon teams. It is a remarkable turnaround for a program that lost five of its last six tilts in 2014.
Take Notice of Turpin – One of the most pleasant surprises of 2015 has been Turpin (5-0, 2-0). The Spartans topped their 2014 & ’13 win total after taking down previously unbeaten Glen Este (4-1, 1-1). Turpin has taken control of the Eastern Cincinnati Conference behind upset victories over Kings and Glen Este to start ECC play. The Spartans are giving up just 12.6 points per contest and no one has put up more than 17 on them.
Edgewood Explodes – Over the past two weeks Edgewood (4-1, 1-0) has come to life on offense. The Cougars have combined for 111 points in those victories. Quarterback Drew Reckart is 19/27 for 455 yards with four touchdowns passes in the past two contests. The Edgewood ground game behind Dakota Graham and Devon Garrett has amassed 738 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns.
La Salle 56, Northwest 19
Junior Christian Turner showed that there was more to the La Salle (5-0) offense than just Jeremy Larkin. Turner ran for career highs of 162 yards and three touchdowns on just nine totes as the Lancers scored 28 unanswered second half points to knock Northwest (4-1) out of the ranks of the unbeaten. La Salle gained 414 yards, had seven rushing touchdowns and averaged 12.5 per carry as they wore down the smaller Knights defense. Larkin gained 124 yards on 10 carries with a touchdown.
