Simon Kenton still perfect
- Updated: September 12, 2015
INDEPENDENCE, Ky. – It took just four plays and 59 seconds for Simon Kenton to march 65 yards and put the first points on the board Friday.
The Pioneer were all business in taking down rival Dixie Heights, 35-7 on Friday.
The Colonels handed Simon Kenton its only two losses a year ago. For the home team and returning lettermen it was sweet revenge.
The first series of the game was capped off when quarterback Cameron Racke went 30 yards for a score. The tone was set by senior running back Dillon Powell who scampered nine and 11 yards on the first two plays of the contest.
Powell ended the night with 103 yards on 19 carries and a score.
“Dillon is a special, special player,” Pioneers head coach Jeff Marksberry said.
Powell who excels in the classroom could very well get a shot to play ball in the Ivy League according to Marksberry.
Dixie Heights would answer on the next possession. A Jose Torres 2-yard run cut the lead to 8-7 with less than eight minutes into this affair. That would be all the prosperity that the Colonels would enjoy. The Simon Kenton defense would put the clamps on after that in route to holding its second consecutive opponent to seven points.
The Pioneers held Dixie Heights to just 123 yards on the ground and 73 through the air.
Racke took control from there with a pair of touchdowns passes. Sandwiched in between was a Dylan Hampton scoring run as Simon Kenton built a 31-7 halftime lead and putting the game out of reach. Racke ended the evening 7-10 for 127 yards and two touchdown tosses. He carried the ball four times for 50 more yards and a score.
This was the first of three straight home games for Simon Kenton. The next two weeks will see the Pioneers taking on Cooper (3-1) and then Highlands (1-3). Dixie heights will look for its first victory as they host Conner (2-1).
