St. Xavier tops La Salle to wrap up GCL slate
- Updated: October 9, 2015
Rated as one of the top matchups in the nation by MaxPreps for the week, the annual GCL South clash between St. Xavier and La Salle did not disappoint.
The Bombers defeated the Lancers, 24-14 on Friday, as St. Xavier finished its GCL schedule 2-1 while handing La Salle its first conference loss.
Despite being down or tied for most of the game, a late field goal and touchdown lifted the Bombers over the Lancers, and handed La Salle its first loss of the season.
“It feels good to get a win,” St. Xavier Head Coach Steve Specht said. “It was a great game, a hard-fought game last week, we came out on the short end, and I’m proud of how our kids fought all night.”
The Lancers got the scoring started in the first quarter on a 24-yard TD run to give La Salle a 7-0 lead early. The Lancers began the drive on the Bombers’ 41-yard line and advanced on half their yard on a pass interference penalty on St. Xavier.
After both teams went three-and-out, St. Xavier responded in the second quarter when Quinn Earley found a hole through the defensive line and found the end zone on a 39-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game at seven apiece.
On their next possession, the Lancers drove down the field and scored on a 23-yard pass from Nick Watson to Larkin to give the Lancers the 14-7 lead.
La Salle was on the brink of scoring again at the end of the first half but a missed 27-yard field goal by the Lancers kept the margin at seven going into halftime.
St. Xavier came out of the locker room strong and tied the game on a two-yard rush by quarterback Sean Clifford.
The Bombers took their first and only lead of the game in the fourth quarter when Nick Arcuri kicked a 51-yard field goal successfully through the uprights to give St. Xavier the 17-14 lead.
A late touchdown would extend the Bombers’ lead to 10, which they held to the end.
La Salle (6-1, 1-1 in GCL South) will go back to Lancer Stadium next Friday to take on St. Charles while St. Xavier (5-2, 2-1 in GCL South) will travel to Indianapolis Warren Central.
