Best Bets: Dayton – Week 7
- Updated: October 7, 2015
The time has come for teams to separate themselves from the pack. With just four more auditions until the playoff fields are set this is where the cream starts to rise to the tops. The Southwestern Buckeye League will see many of their top squads squaring off with the winners in great positions to fulfill post-season aspirations. It is a pivotal week to say the least in the SWBL.
Here is a look at the games that will have an impact on who we see come November in this week’s Best Bets.
Valley View (4-2, 0-2) at Monroe (3-3, 2-1) – A great start out of the gate for Valley View has since turned into tough times. The Spartans have dropped two in a row in to start conference play. Monroe has hung in there versus a very tough schedule and the injury bug. The Fighting Hornets three losses are to teams who are a combined 17-1. The first team that gets to 20 points wins but neither squad may reach that mark Friday night.
Madison Senior (3-3, 2-0) at Carlisle (4-2, 3-0) – There won’t be many passes thrown in this contest as it features some of the SWBL Southwestern’s top running backs. Ridge Reed has become the workhorse during Carlisle’s current three game winning streak. The junior has run for 867 of his 1,269 yards and 10 of his 15 touchdowns during that span. Madison Senior has struggled to find the groove it had to end the 2015 season. The Mohawks have ran the ball 292 times in 329 offensive plays this season. Zach Friend is Madison’s top rusher, receiver and has a team high four interceptions for the defense. He will need another standout performance and some help from some teammates if the Mohawks are to come out ahead in this one.
Springboro (5-1, 1-0) at Xenia (3-3, 1-0) – There haven’t been many offenses hotter than Xenia’s the past the weeks. Winners of three in a row the Buccaneers are averaging 42 points during their current streak. They scored 25 total points in a trio of losses to start 2015. Quarterback Danny Naylor has thrown for 935 yards and 11 touchdowns over the last three games. He has spread the wealth amongst his receivers with Ray James, Montel Hurst, Rocky James and Mechi Harris getting most of the receptions. Springboro has won five in a row after a seven point loss to mason in the opener. The Panthers spread the wealth on offense with quarterback leading the ways. The senior has thrown for 1,327 yards with 14 interceptions and only two interceptions. He also has 262 yards and five scores rushing. Receivers Alex Feldman and Nick Kovacs are each averaging seven receptions and have combined for 12 touchdowns. This should be a track meet and it will be up Xenia to outscore the Panthers and that is a tall order.
Beavercreek (5-1, 1-0) at Springfield (2-4, 0-1) – Time to take the Battlin’ Beavers seriously. Beavercreek wears teams down with an outstanding rushing attack paced by Tim Bradshaw. The senior has 934 yards 10 touchdowns on the ground (155.7/game). The Springfield defense has had trouble stopping the run allowing 180.8 yards per contest and 13 touchdowns. The Wildcats need other skill players to help take some of the load off of Danny Davis. Stop Davis and the Battlin’ Beavers make life miserable for the home team.
Sidney (4-2, 0-1) at Butler (4-2, 2-1) – This is a big test for Sidney. The Yellow Jackets were outmanned against Trotwood-Madison. There are no quality wins for Sidney this is a huge opportunity for them to prove that they have turned the corner. Butler can put points on the board in bunches. The Aviators offense has found the end zone 26 times. The backfield tandem of Nic Martin and Logan Flatt have combined for 793 yards and 14 touchdowns rushing. This contest has all the makings of a high scoring affair and that will try these teams depth which should favor the home team’s cause.
Kenton Ridge (5-1, 1-0) at Springfield Shawnee (2-4, 0-1) – All of the sudden Shawnee can put itself back into the playoff picture if they can sneak out a victory over the visiting Cougars. The Braves who really struggled on both sides of the ball dropping their first four contest gained big confidence after taking down Tippecanoe last week. Kenton Ridge has seen senior leadership take center stage for a third straight season. The Cougars have everything percolating on offense averaging 51.3 points per game over their last three outings. Jayden Davis ran for a career high 266 yards last week in KR’s win over Tecumseh. He can will the Cougars to victory in a tight game.
