Roundup: Dayton – Week 6
- Updated: October 3, 2015
The big boys stepped up and took care of business in Greater Western Ohio Conference openers on Friday night. The Central Buckeye Conference and Southwestern Buckeye League are still waiting for teams to step out of the shadows and become legitimate playoff contenders. Here is a look at what happened around the Gem City last evening.
Will the Real CBC Kenton Step Forward – Stebbins (5-1, 0-1) and Tippecanoe (5-1, 0-1) went into their CBC Kenton opener Friday night undefeated. Both teams fell to 1-4 squads. Tipp fell to Springfield Shawnee 35-28 while Stebbins lost to Bellefontaine by three, 17-14. League foe Tecumseh backed its way into the playoffs a year ago after starting 5-0 then losing their final five regular season games. Could Stebbins or Tippecanoe be the next to follow suit?
Franklin Starting to Roll – After a 1-2 start that saw Franklin (4-2, 2-0) fall to Edgewood and Springboro (who are a combined 10-2) the Wildcats have reeled off three straight wins. It appears as if the SWBL Southwestern title is going to come down to a Week 10 showdown with Brookville (6-0, 3-0).
Bucs Right Ship – Xenia (3-3, 1-0) is on fire. Winners of three in a row the Bucaneers are averaging 42 points during their current streak. They scored 25 total points in a trio of losses to start 2015. Quarterback Danny Naylor has thrown for 935 yards and 11 touchdowns over the last three games. He has spread the wealth amongst his receivers with Ray James, Montel Hurst, Rocky James and Mechi Harris getting most of the receptions.
Centerville 53, Fairmont 21 – The Centerville (3-3, 1-0) defense played one of its best games of the season allowing a season low 21 points and coming up with six takeaways in beating Fairmont (2-4, 0-1). Colin neace recovered three fumbles and Austin Hanes intercepted two passes including a 56-yard pick six for the victors. The Elks offense was led by quarterback Jacob Harrison who amassed 294 yards of total offense (146 passing, 148 rushing) and accounted for three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing). Harrison had scoring runs 56 and 67 yards.
Trotwood-Madison 59, Sidney 21 – For the second time in three weeks Rondric Bogan ran for more than 200 yards as Trotwood-Madison (5-1, 1-0) ambushed an upstart Sidney (4-2, 0-1) squad. Bogan’s 202 yards and three rushing touchdowns upped his season total 572 yards and six TDs on the ground. It was the sixth time this season that a Rams back has gained more than 200 yards rushing in a game. Raveion Hargrove has the other four stellar outings.
Wayne 35, Springfield 0 – Wayne (6-0, 1-0) recorded its second shutout of the season on the road at Springfield (2-4, 0-1). The Warriors were led by transfer Daryl McCleskey who was in on seven total tackles and recovered a fumble. McCleskey also ran the ball three times with two trips to the end zone and 108 yards rushing. He also caught three passes for another 50 yards. Another transfer making his presence felt at Wayne is senior quarterback Messiah DeWeaver who raised his season totals to 1,176 yards and 12 touchdowns passing without an interception.
