East Central captures regional crown

ST. LEON, Ind. – Luke Patton ran for a career-high five touchdowns as East Central (11-2) won its first Regional championship since 2003 by knocking off visiting Evansville Harrison (10-3), 42-28 on Friday.

The victory gave the Trojans their sixth regional title in school history. Patton would finish with 183 yards on the ground as he pushed his season total to over 1,500 yards and 30 plus touchdowns rushing.

East Central built a 14-0 halftime advantage and the Warriors could never get back to even, having to play catch up all night.

A pair of costly interceptions did not help Harrison’s efforts. Zach Theobald snared an interception in the end zone, ending a Warriors drive as time ran out in the first half. Dylan Watkins put the final nail in Harrison’s coffin with a pick six late in the fourth quarter that gave East Central breathing room with a 21-point cushion, enabling the Trojans to close out the contest in front of their exuberant fans.

The win by the Trojans sets up a rematch with Roncalli (9-4), which beat East Central, 31-10 in regular season finale. It will be the third time that these two teams have met in East Central’s last 17 games.
