Roundup: NKY – Playoffs, Round 1
- Updated: November 7, 2015
Scott 33, Rowan County 26
A furious fourth quarter rally saw Scott (9-2) escape with its first playoff victory since 2002 and first-ever at home. Eagles’ running back Roberto London scored on a thrilling 25-yard run with under a minute left to send Scott into round a second round home tilt versus Ashland blazer (9-2). The Eagles were a beast running the football with 290 yards on 28 carries. London finished with 102 yards, Nelson Perrin had 90 and Danny Fitzgerald had 77 more. Fitzgerald ran for two scores and Perrin had one rushing and one receiving touchdown.
The strong survive in Class 2A
There were no surprises in the Class 2A District 5 versus District 6 opening round matchups. The cream rose to the top. Lloyd (8-3) hit the eight win mark for the third time in the last four years after shutting out Carroll County, 41-0. The Juggernauts will travel to Walton-Verona (6-5), a place where they won, 28-20 in the season opener. That was the first of four losses to the year out for the Bearcats. Friday night’s triumph over Newport gave Walton-Verona six wins in its last seven games. Noah Richardson found the end zone three times and went over 1,000 yards rushing for the season. He joins teammate Halsey Page who has run for more than 1,400 yards on the year. Page had two touchdowns against the Wildcats giving him 15 on the season.
The lower half of the bracket will see Holy Cross head to NewCath for a chance to avenge a seven point loss to the Thoroughbreds from just four weeks ago. Both teams won handily Friday night. NewCath running back John Harris scored three touchdowns as the ‘Breds scored 31 first quarter points to put Gallatin County away early, 38-7. Holy Cross will not be lacking motivation nor will Walton-Verona in Friday final four District matchups.
Cinderella seasons come to an end
All was fine and dandy Friday afternoon as Ludlow (6-5) was set to host its first ever playoff game at James Rigney Stadium. Just several hours later Kentucky Country Day rained on the Panthers parade handing Ludlow a heartbreaking 21-14 loss. Bishop Brossart (9-0) saw its bar-setting 2015 campaign end abruptly as the Mustangs could get no traction against Raceland in a 22-14 loss. Brossart set a school record for wins including seven in a row to begin the year. That was quite an accomplishment considering that the Mustangs finished ’14 at 1-9 and came into this campaign having lost eight straight.
Only the best is left in 6A
The Class 6A opening round playoff games had plenty of flare to them. Nathan Brown threw for five touchdowns passes going 8-16 for 215 yards as Cooper (9-2) blanked Seneca, 40-0 for its sixth straight victory. Jaguars receiver Dante Hendrix caught three of those scoring tosses from Brown to give him 13 on the season. Hendrix went over the 1,000 yard mark receiving for the year. Cooper will play host to Conner (8-3) who edged out Campbell County, 14-12. It was the fifth win of the year for the Cougars by seven points or less.
Simon Kenton (11-0) remained perfect by downing Butler, 48-8. Quarterback Cameron Racke ran for a career high four touchdowns and threw for another for the victors. It was the ninth straight week that the Pioneers have held their opponent to 15 points or less including eight or fewer six times. Up next for Simon Kenton is a rematch with Ryle (9-2) who had little problem disposing of Boone County, 49-14. The Raiders fell at Simon Kenton 28-7 three weeks ago.
