Friday night featured two rematch games in NKY Class 2A playoff action, with NewCath and Lloyd advancing to the regional title game.
Newport Central Catholic 46, Holy Cross 15
Patrick Henschen threw a career high four touchdown passes helping Newport Central Catholic (7-5) knock off Holy Cross (6-6) for a second time this season. The Thoroughbreds have won six of their last seven as they are playing their best football of the year at the right time. NewCath running back Jacob Smith pitched in with 177 yards and a touchdown. NewCath will take on Lloyd (9-3) at Newport Stadium next Friday night. The T’Breds beat the Juggernauts in see-saw battle 29-26 in Week 8 of the regular season.
Lloyd 31, Walton-Verona 14
Up 18-0 Lloyd (9-3) answered a 14-point run by Walton-Verona (6-6) with a pair of second half scores to seal the victory. It was the second time Juggernauts have defeated the Bearcats. They beat Walton-Verona, 28-20 in the season opener. Up next for Lloyd is NewCath. The Juggernauts let victory slip through their fingers versus the Thoroughbreds during the regular season. They will be out to avenge that heartbreaking loss. This will be the fourth meeting between the two schools in Lloyd’s last 17 games.
Final Four Frenzy
No less than three and up to five teams will represent Northern Kentucky in the KHSAA state semi-finals. In Class 2A, 5A and 6A clashes between local teams next Friday will send the victors into the round of four. Regular season rematches between Lloyd/NewCath (2A), Highlands/CovCath (5A) and Cooper/Simon Kenton (6A) will settle things on the field between heated rivals. In Class 1A Beechwood (11-1) has to win at Louisville Holy Cross (7-5) in order to move on. Surprising Scott (10-2) Scott will host a very good Johnson Central (10-1) squad.
