Wayne, Colerain Remain in Media 25
- Updated: December 8, 2015
The Media Compilaton Top 25 has its third No. 1 team of the season as Corona Centennial (CA) ascends to the pole position with just two weeks left to play.
Centennial jumped out to a 34-10 lead in the second quarter — and went on to put up 55 points in the half — against now-No. 5 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) before holding off a late charge to claim a 62-52 victory. The outcome sets up a rematch of the 2014 CIF Open Bowl against No. 6 De La Salle (Concord, CA) in two weeks.
If Centennial were to win that game it is likely that the program will claim the consensus title — and perhaps a unanimous one among the six considered polls. If De La Salle downs Centennial for the fourth time in five tries then it will create an interesting final polling with multiple teams claiming a piece of the national title.

Aside from the change at the top the Media Compilation Top 25 was shaped by state finals across the country.
Jenks (OK) and Eastside Catholic (Sammamish, WA) broke into the poll this week tied at No. 20 after each claimed the crown in the respective states.
Jenks avenged its lone loss of the season, downing Broken Arrow (OK) to win the Class 6A title.
Eastside Catholic made an improbably comeback against Bellevue (WA) to erase a three-score lead late in the game to win in overtime.
Spanish Fort (AL) took out previously-ranked No. 17 Clay-Chalkville (Pinson, AL) to win the Alabama Class 6A title. The Toros came into the poll at No. 23 with the victory.
Don Bosco (Ramsey, NJ) won the Non-Public Group IV title over St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, NJ) and took the No. 25 spot away from La Salle (Cincinnati, OH) — which also won its state title this week in Ohio — as the computer polls moved the Ironmen into the last spot of the Compilation.
The Media Compilation takes into account the four most respected human polls, the top computer model, and an emerging hybrid human-algorithm to make for the best rankings in the country.
Those under consideration are the NationalHSFootball.com HSFB100; USAToday Super 25; MaxPreps Xcellent25; PrepNation Top 25; Jeff Fisher’s Top 25 and the Freeman Computer Top 25 — which is also known as the MaxPreps Computer Poll.
For a mathematically sound compilation each team is given points from 40 to 16 for being inside the Top 25 of each of those six polls with no points awarded for any additional rankings due to the differing size of each poll.
Points are assigned in decreasing value starting with 40 being awarded for No. 1 and on down to 16 for No. 25 which will result in a more accurate representation of the polls. Assigning points starting at 1 point would skew the tally in the instance that a team received a single, high placement versus a team with lower placements in multiple polls, raising the baseline eliminates the outlier impact in the compilation.
The poll will be updated and released each Tuesday of the football season.

Centennial (CA) | 1 | 6 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 |
Centennial jumped out to an early lead against previous-No. 1 St. John Bosco and finished off the game in victory formation. The Huskies scored a ridiculous 55 points in the first half of a 62-52 contest. It will have a week off before playing No. 6 De La Salle for a national title. It moved up four spots in the HSFB100; three at USAToday and PrepNation, as well as one from MaxPreps, Fisher Algorithm, and Freeman Computer.

Allen (TX) | 3 | 5 | 5 | 6 | 1 | 5 |
Allen oves up to No. 2 with a big win over HSFB100-No. 40 Denton Ryan, 48-27. The team is looking poised to take the state title for the fourth year in a row. The win was viewed as a largely expected on as the team moved up positional points at the USAToday, PrepNation, and MaxPreps just sliding it up to backfill for St. John Bosco losing.

Bishop Gorman (NV) | 6 | 1 | 2 | 4 | 3 | 6 |
Nevada Class 4A Champions: Bishop Gorman finished out the season with a 62-21 win over Liberty in the state finals. It bettered No. 25 Don Bosco as well as HSFB100-ranked Chandler and Bingham. It also beat Long Beach Poly, Servite, and Bellevue. The schedule had a lot of impressive names but most all of those teams were in down years.

Colquitt County (GA) | 2 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 5 | 19 |
Colquitt used an explosive fourth quarter to pull away from HSFB100-No. 30 Mill Creek for a 52-31 victory. It was an impressive point total as Mill Creek came into the game with one of the Top 5 defenses in the state of Georgia. It will play what may be the best defense in the state this week as No. 17 Roswell advanced to the state finals. The Packers gained big points this week as it was placed in the Freeman Computer again. It has been a yo-yo in the computer which is always geared lower on Georgia.

St. John Bosco (CA) | 5 | 10 | 5 | 6 | 9 | 2 |
Season Complete: The Braves won the Trinity League title and had 12 of its 13 games played with a running clock. It started slowly in the Pac5 finals against now-No.1 Corona Centennial and then lost its starting quarterback to close the game. The talent and results support a Top 10 finish even as it didn’t play for a state title.
6 (5) |
205 |
De La Salle (CA) | 7 | 5 | 8 | 7 | 7 | 7 |
De La Salle blanked Foothills in an expected result, 35-0. The Spartans were predictably unchallenged in the NorCal playoffs and will have another week of rest prior to playing now-No. 1 Corona Centennial. It will be the fifth time in eight years that the two are meeting in the final game of the season. De La Salle has won three of the previous four and if that trend continues it will make for an intersting final polling week.

IMG Academy (FL) | 10 | 4 | 7 | 9 | 6 | 9 |
Season Complete: IMG had a solid season with quality wins over DeSoto (TX), Cocoa (FL), and a trio of New Jersey squads — Bergen Catholic (Oradell, NJ), St. Joseph (Montvale, NJ), and Paramus Catholic (NJ). It will buoy as other teams finish out the season but figures to be safe for a Top 10 finish.
8 (7) |
200 |
St. Edward (OH) | 11 | 8 | 9 | 10 | 4 | 4 |
Division I Champions: The Eagles were up early then tied late before closing out a state title against No. 22 Wayne, 45-35. St. Edward played one of the toughest regular season schedules in the country and got to rest during one of the easier playoff paths before playing in the state finals. This result is one of the bigger surprises in the country as the team opened the year No. 3 in Cleveland and went on to win the state.

Katy (TX) | 4 | 7 | 6 | 1 | 8 | — |
Katy is pushing Allen for the top spot in the Texas rankings and even added a No. 1 overall ranking from PrepNation this week. This week the Tigers could have done whatever it chose to against HSFB100-No. 61 Manvel but closed it out, 35-17. Kyle Porter rushed for 212 yards and five scores. It will play No. 18 Cibolo Steele this week and perhaps No. 16 Lake Travis in the finals. It may be a sleeper for a National Title.
10 (10) |
175 |
DeMatha (MD) | 13 | 12 | 13 | 17 | 13 | 3 |
WCAC Champions: Lorenzo Harrison rushed for 243 yards and three scores to seal the WCAC title for the third year in a row. DeMatha had pushed into the Top 5 with wins over Miami Central (FL) and American Heritage (Plantation, FL) to open the season but it fell to rival Gonzaga (Washington, DC) to end its dream of a National Title. A Top 25 finish to the season is still a success for the Stags.
11 (11t) |
174 |
Male (KY) | 16 | 9 | 11 | 11 | 11 | 14 |
Class 6A Champions: Male opened the year in one of the final slots of the HSFB100 and used a dominant performance over Trinity to move into the Top 25 where it played out the rest of the season ranked in all other polls as well. It edged Trinity in the playoffs as well to cement its spot among the elite in the country. The Bulldogs have won 8-of-9 against Trinity and St. Xavier in Louisville.
12 (13) |
150 |
Gilman (MD) | 14 | 14 | 14 | 24 | 14 | 16 |
MIAA Conference A Champion: The Greyhounds went unbeaten through conference play and added wins over Good Counsel (MD) as well as Paramus Catholic (NJ). It opened the year with a tough loss to St. Edward — which it probably should have won.
13t (14) |
131 |
Loyola (IL) | 23 | 18 | 16 | 16 | 23 | 23 |
Class 8A Champions: Loyola won the state championship with a running clock contest against Marist, 41-0. Dara Laja extended his school record for rushing yards with another 152 in the contest. It took it to the Chicago Catholic Leauge this year, bettering Brother Rice, Providence, St. Rita and Mt. Carmel. In the playoffs it beat Stevenson and Homewood-Flossmoor to bolster its strength of schedule.
13t (19t) |
131 |
St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) | 17 | 11 | 15 | 19 | 12 | — |
Aquinas added placement in the PrepNation poll as it advanced to the state finals with a 27-10 win over Braden River. Aquinas has overcome a myriad of injuries but has navigated a quietly strong schedule to keep a Top 25 placement though its performance this week was somewhat less than expected.
15 (16) |
130 |
Center Grove (IN) | — | 19 | 17 | 14 | 10 | 15 |
Class 6A Champions: Center Grove ran its way to a state title in Indiana, bettering Warren Central twice, Carmel, Avon, Ben Davis and Penn. It was a solid year for the program. Titus McCoy was as steady as it gets for a high school running back as he was the focal point of the attack all year but was hardly slowed let alone stopped.
16 (19t) |
125 |
Lake Travis (TX) | 15 | — | 20 | 8 | 25 | 12 |
Lake Travis ran wild over Rockwall to move to the state semifinals, 45-24. The Cavaliers are playing as well as it has since its move up in class and could be poised to take on No. 9 Katy in the state title game. It added placement in the Fisher Algorithm this week which boosted it towards the Top 15.
17 (22t) |
118 |
Roswell (GA) | 9 | 15 | 10 | 12 | — | — |
Roswell won its second battle in a row — this time against previous-No. 15 Grayson, 30-26. The game was an instant classic and one that will leave the Hornets bruised entering the state finals. It lost the lead inside a minute and then hit a hail mary to win the game. The team gained a major bump in the PrepNation poll going from unranked to the Top 15. It is still unranked in the computers.
18 (18) |
102 |
Steele (TX) | — | 13 | 18 | 15 | 16 | — |
Steele was not impressive for the second consecutive week in downing Clemens, 35-14. Turth be told the Knights have not looked like a Top 25 for much of the season but it has maintained its spot in the Texas state rankings as other have shuffled around it. It has No. 9 Katy this week and that will be the ultimate litmus test.
19 (21) |
87 |
Trinity Christian (FL) | 8 | — | 12 | 16 | — | — |
Class 3A Champions: Trinity Christian had eight running clock wins this season and blasted American Heritage (Delray Beach, FL) in the state finals, 30-3. It crushed HSFB100-ranked West Orange as well. The team has been one of the best in the state the last few seasons but it could have had its most talented team this year.
20t (–) |
81 |
Eastside Catholic (WA) | — | 20 | 19 | 21 | 23 | — |
Class 3A Champions: Eastside Catholic won a second straight state title by bettering Bellevue with a furious comeback in the second half. It opened the year by crushing Oceanside in The Honor Bowl and closed it with a state title victory. In between it was as expected from the talented team.
20t (–) |
81 |
Jenks (OK) | 18 | 23 | 22 | — | — | 20 |
Class 6A Champions: Jenks brought back 18 starters this year and won another state championship. It beat Union twice and avenged its lone loss to Broken Arrow in a big way during the state finals, 35-14..
22 (8) |
79 |
Wayne (OH) | 19 | — | — | — | 17 | 8 |
Season Complete: The Warriors fell to No. 8 St. Ed for the second straight season in the state finals. This year it was a 45-35 setback after the team fought back to tie late in the game. Its best win was against No. 24 Colerain and then it nearly knocked off St. Ed. The team tumbled in three polls and was given a parachute in others. It dropped just one spot in the HSFB100, four in Freeman Computer, and five within the Fisher Algorithm. It dropped outside of the USAToday poll from No. 15, out of MaxPreps from No. 10, and out of PrepNation from No. 11.
23 (–) |
77 |
Spanish Fort (AL) | 22 | 22 | 21 | 22 | — | — |
Class 6A Champions: Spanish Fort downed Clay-Chalkville in an entertaining state finals, 31-28. The Toros quarterback Tyler Johnston finished his career with an unblemished record and if he hadn’t been hurt for the playoffs last year it would be a third state title.
24 (22t) |
74 |
Colerain (OH) | 20 | — | — | — | 18 | 11 |
Season Complete: Colerain lost two fumbles in the first half and had a bad punt snap give Wayne the ball on its 10 allowing the first score, it was intercepted to set up another short field in the fourth quarter, and then lost another fumble to set up a third Wayne score. Miscues sent Colerain home after having a solid season where it pushed into the Top 10 of the HSFB100.
25 (–) |
68 |
Don Bosco (NJ) | — | — | — | 18 | 20 | 17 |
Non-Public Group IV Champions: The Ironmen had an interesting season with multiple quality wins — Rummel (Metarie, LA), Bergen Catholic (Oradell, NJ), St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, NJ) among them — but two of its three losses are games it would like to have back. A game it shouldn’t have lost to Paramus Catholic kept it from being discussed as a unanimous Top 25 team.
