Cincy Offensive POY: David Montgomery

It’s one thing to be consistently good but to be consistently great that makes one elite, a real special talent. Mount Healthy quarterback David Montgomery put an exclamation point on his membership into that select group of individuals with a senior season that was one for the ages. That performance earned Montgomery the 2015 TriStateFootball.com Cincinnati Offensive Player of the Year as TSF paid tribute to finest from Northern Kentucky, Dayton, Cincinnati and Southeast Indiana area’s high school gridiron at the Year in Review Show on Wednesday night at the Holy Grail-Banks in downtown Cincinnati.
The numbers for Montgomery astonishing considering most teams keyed solely on him in the Owls offense. He ran 2,707 yards, threw for 726 more with 41 rushing and seven passing touchdowns in 12 games. Montgomery had a streak of nine consecutive games where he ran for at least three touchdowns. The senior was named the 2015 AP Ohio Division III Division III Ohio Offensive Player of the Year honors for his efforts. On 11 occasions Montgomery ran for 170 yards or more (nine games of 200 or more) including three contests of 300-plus.
He wasn’t stopped until the second round of the playoffs as Mount Healthy (8-4) fell to Wapakoneta. The Owls never lost a first round playoff game with Montgomery as the starter at quarterback. Mount Healthy went 5-3 in the postseason with him under center.
The Iowa State-bound Montgomery rewrote the rushing record books at Mount Healthy finishing his career with 6,664 yards and 91 touchdowns on the ground. He had seasons of 1,783, 1,951 and 2,707 yards rushing. Montgomery threw for another 2,283 yards with 25 touchdown passes and scored 569 points in an Owls uniform.
Other finalists included seniors Deshaunte Jones (Colerain), Jeremy Larkin (LaSalle), Peyton Ramsey (Elder), Johnny Noyen (CHCA), juniors Reed Aichholz (Indian Hill) and Luke Waddell (Loveland). Larkin was the 2015 TriStateFootball.com Cincinnati Offensive Player of the Year with Montgomery, Jones and Ramsey also being finalists a year ago. Jones will attend Iowa State with his long-time friend Montgomery, Larkin is off to Northwestern, Ramsey will play for Indiana and Noyen heads up to Dayton.
