Dayton Defensive POY: Tobias Gilliam
- Updated: February 11, 2016
When you can shrink the field from a secondary position you are a pretty special player and that is what sets Wayne defensive back Tobias Gilliam apart from his peers. The Warriors seniors on field talents earned him the 2015 TriStateFootball.com Dayton Defensive Player of the Year as TSF paid tribute to finest from Northern Kentucky, Dayton, Cincinnati and Southeast Indiana area’s high school gridiron at the Year in Review Show on Wednesday night at the Holy Grail-Banks in downtown Cincinnati. He becomes the first Wayne player to win the award.
The Kentucky-bound Gilliam was named Division I All-Ohio, The Southwest District Defensive Player of the Year and the GWOC Central Defensive Player of the Year after recording 77 total tackles with one-and-a-half sacks and two interceptions this past fall. He was integral part of a Wayne defense that allowed just 12.1 points per contests and held eight opponents to seven points or fewer, including four shutouts as the Warriors went 14-1 and were state runner-up for a second year in a row.
Other finalist included an all senior cast of Trevor Good (Brookville), Ben Hinton (Bishop Fenwick), Nic Martin (Butler), Chase Struewing (Waynesville), Roland Walder (Trotwood-Madison) and Louie Wasoski (Miamisburg).
