Sophomore QB’s Could Rule EIAC
- Updated: April 4, 2016
One of the more intriguing story lines for the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference this coming fall will be who is under center. Of the eight teams in the league there is a good chance that four of them will be starting sophomores at quarterback.
Mason Springman and Dalton Light (Connersville) got at healthy dose of varsity football as freshman last fall. At Rushville, Springman threw for 732 yards with eight touchdowns including games of 141 and 161 yards in October. Look for him to improve on his .342 completion percentage. Light should be oozing with confidence after throwing for 230 yards and three touchdowns in Connersville’s playoff loss to Pendleton Heights. He finished the season with 430 yards and five touchdowns through the air. Both players took their lumps on teams that had just one victory a year ago.
Trey Heidlage has an inside track on the job at Batesville. He was the only freshman who letter for the Bulldogs in 2015. He did not throw a pass but did have a rushing touchdown and kicked nine extra points as Batesville finished at 10-2.
Alex Maxwell will take over at quarterback for reigning state runner-up East Central. As a freshman Maxwell played in 11 games rushing for 230 yards, throwing for 27 more and he accounted for three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing). He has the biggest shoes to fill following in the footsteps of two-time EIAC 4A and TristateFootball.com Offensive Player of the Year, Luke Patton.
There might some growing pains early on but expect these youngsters to settle in by mid-season. The Class of 2019 quarterbacks in the EIAC could turn out to be one of the leagues best ever by the time it is all said and done three years from now.
