CovCath wins on missed PAT again
- Updated: September 9, 2016
A late missed extra point resulted in a one-point CovCath win for the second straight week.
On Friday, Lexington Catholic appeared to have tied the score on a touchdown in the final minute, but the Colonels survived thanks to a missed PAT, 21-20.
Trailing, 21-14, the Knights’ Nathan Schnurr caught a 22-yard pass from Kirk Fagot with 34 seconds left in regulation, setting up the ensuing point-after try that failed.
Last week, CovCath took advantage of a missed extra point by Sycamore in overtime, following with a TD and PAT of its own to win it by one.
In this game, neither team led by more than seven at any point.
The Colonels took the lead with 4:24 left in the first quarter on an 80-yard interception return by Kameron Butler.
LexCath answered with a pair of quick scores. Ben Buchignani caught an 18-yard TD pass from Fagot late in the first quarter to tie it.
The Knights then took the lead when Jack Fagot pulled in a 22-yard catch from J. Fagot less than two minutes into the second quarter.
But CovCath’s Casey McGinness broke a 42-yard TD run eight minutes later to tie it at 14 heading into halftime.
The Colonels’ Anthony Best scored what would ultimately be the deciding touchdown on a 7-yard run midway through the third quarter.
McGinness finished with 117 rushing yards and one score on 20 carries, and QB A.J. Mayer went 22-for-38 for 246 yards in the CovCath win. His top target, Josh Newman, ended the night with eight receptions for 95 yards.
The Colonels, who have won back-to-back games by one point and three straight by one score, will host Beechwood next week.
