Foreman leads Spartans in homecoming victory
- Updated: September 10, 2016
CONNERSVILLE Ind – The only thing clear headed into the Connersville vs South Dearborn game Friday night was one team was going to get the winless monkey off their back. After the Spartans caused five turnovers on the first five drives for the South Dearborn it was evident Connersville came to play.
They cruised to victory in their homecoming game 40-0 over the Knights. Those five turnovers added 20 points to the board for the Spartans in the first quarter as they sat in the drivers seat the rest of the game.
Coach Adam Kelly’s defense drew a line in the sand and never let the Knights cross it. Connersville gave up just 43 yards in the first half with the biggest play being a 21 yard strike in the second quarter to tight end Zack Dick from freshman Adam Dixon. It was also the biggest play of the entire game for South Dearborn.
The Spartans lead 27-0 at the half thanks in large part of junior Donovan Foreman. The Spartan runner racked up 157 yards and three scores (21,42,83) in the half on just 10 carries. He ended the game with 244 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 12 carries. He was helped by quarterback Dalton Light who hit Mason Sullenberger for a 59 yard touchdown pass. Light completed just two of his six attempts in the game, but the other was a 41 yard pass to Sullenberger. The sophomore signal caller had an even 100 yards in the air for the entire game.
The Spartans racked up 268 yards of total offense in the first half on the Knights and added 183 yard in the second half and one more touchdown on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Light. It marks the first time all season the Spartans break the 450 yard mark on offense. The defense was even more stout in the second half for Connersville as they allowed just 15 yards to the Knights. For the game South Dearborn had just 58 yards of offense.
After being named homecoming king, running back Christian McHenry carried the load for the Spartans in the second half netting 93 yards on 14 carries.
The Spartans defense was also rewarded in the second half when Sullenberger returned an interception 39 yards for the final score of the game.
The win gives Kelly a 4-1 record of the Knights in his tenure as the Spartans coach. The win also get the monkey off the back of the Spartans as they head into their annual War of 44 with the Rushville Lions. The Lions enter the contest without a victory after narrowly losing to a very good Batesville team at home. They travel to Connersville next week for the bragging rights and the traveling trophy.
For the Knights, once again they are held to less than 100 yards of offense, but there could be light at the end of the tunnel for the future. They have just six seniors and play mostly sophomores and freshman. While they are taking their bumps now, they look to get in the win column next week as they host Greensburg. The Pirates are 2-2 after suffering a loss to Lawrenceburg on the the road.
In other EIAC action, East Central ran past Franklin County 44-24.
