La Salle’s Merritt masters Moeller with six TD passes
- Updated: September 30, 2016
The La Salle Lancers came out fast against the Moeller Crusaders and did not look back, dominating them by a score of 55-14.
The Lancers (4-2) saw the end zone for the first time with just over nine minutes remaining in the first quarter, scoring on an 80-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Griffin Merritt to Ben Braybender.
By then end of the first quarter, the game looked as if it would be a close one with the Lancers only leading 14-7, but the second quarter is when everything changed.
La Salle extended their lead to 21-7 only 24 seconds into the period on another Merritt touchdown pass. This began their run of 28 unanswered points in the quarter to take a commanding 42-7 lead at halftime.
The second half the Lancers remained to be in control, scoring 14 more points in the third quarter and not allowing Moeller (3-3) to earn points again until just over eight minutes were left in the game.
Merritt had a career night, only having five incompletions on 22 pass attempts and throwing for 388 yards ― in addition to six touchdown passes.
La Salle’s defense controlled the game all night, forcing Moeller’s quarterback Miles McBride into two interceptions and held him to only 59 passing yards.
Zach Rumpke led the way for the Lancer defense with 8 tackles and one sack.
La Salle will play St. Xavier 7 p.m. Oct. 7 at home in their next matchup. Moeller plays Elder at home on the same day and time.
