Roundup: Dayton – Week 4
- Updated: September 17, 2016
Surprise, surprise, surprise there are some “feel good” stories taking place in the Dayton area after four weeks of football. Oh sure, there are the usual suspects doing their annual thing like Wayne, Alter and Trotwood-Madison but it’s the life that has been breathed in some programs that have been lying dormant for a few years that is the real news. Those schools are restlessly beginning to wake up from their lengthy slumbers.
Here is a look at Week 4 in the Gem City:
Staying Perfect: With victories on Friday night, Alter, Valley View, Franklin, Bellbrook, Indian Lake, Benjamin Logan and Troy all improved to 4-0. Wayne’s win over Miamisburg upped their record to 3-0-1.
Lots of Fun at 3-1: How about these teams feeling confident after getting out of the gate at 3-1. Northmont, Lebanon, Springfield, Greenville, Ponitz, Dunbar, Preble Shawnee and Wilmington can all now serious think about playoff aspirations. All four teams in the GWOC National West Division are currently sitting at 3-1. It is going to be a dogfight for postseason berths once those teams start squaring off.
GWOC Thrillers: Lebanon squeaked by previously unbeaten Beavercreek 27-21 on a 35-yard pass from Dakota Allen to Jordan Campbell with just 12 seconds left in that contest. Springfield did one better than that as some trickery from the Wildcats had fullback Leonard Taylor connect with Danny Davis on a 38-yard pass as time expired in a 26-20 win over Centerville. Davis finished the night with 230 all-purpose yards his lowest output in the last eight contest.
No Mistake on Indian Lake: a First ever playoff appearance in 2015 for Indian Lake has opened the gate to a winning culture at the school. The once downtrodden program remained perfect by trouncing Springfield Shawnee to win its ninth consecutive regular season game dating back to last year. The Lakers are averaging 47 points per game while giving up only 8.5 points to their opponents.
He’s Only a Freshman: Brady Evans looks like a veteran even though the freshman has only played four varsity games. Evans went 12-18 for 344 yards, ran for 56 more yards and tossed two touchdowns as Wilmington improved to 3-1 with a win over 62-19 win over Greenfield McClain on Friday night. The ‘Canes amassed 652 yards of total offense. They had three runners with gallops of 30 yards or more and three receivers with receptions of 64 yards or more in the affair.
The Men of Troy: It has been a group effort in Troy’s 4-0 start. Trojans running back Josh Browder has carried a large part of the load the past two weeks. The senior has amassed 417 yards of offense (323 rushing) with six trips to the end zone on just 29 touches in that span. After throwing for a school record 2,012 yards a year ago quarterback Hayden Kotwica is on pace to barely get to 1,000 yards through the air. He does have 311 yards on the ground and already tied his personal best with six rushing touchdowns to date. Troy has been sack happy on defense as junior Joah Schricker leads the way with three-and-a-half. Sophomore Shane Shoop follows right behind Schricker with three sacks.
