Roundup: Dayton – Week 5
- Updated: September 24, 2016
It was statement Friday with many teams flexing their muscles and coming up with monster wins. So many close games are proving that you have to play for an entire 48 minutes. Those that aren’t quitting until the final tick is off the clock are being greatly rewarded.
If the second half of the season is anything like the first five weeks of battles it going to make for one wild frenzy in the quest for playoff berths. Things are far from being settled this fall.
Here is a look at Week 5 in the Gem City:
Up for grabs: In Greater Western Ohio Conference all 10 teams in the American North and National West divisions are either 4-1 or 3-2 heading into league play.
Warriors season turning magical: With 12 second left in the fourth quarter Lebanon (4-1) stopped Springfield on a two-point conversion to preserve its 28-27 win over the Wildcats on Friday night. It was the Warriors fourth straight victory. A week prior to this heart-stopper Lebanon took down Beavercreek (4-1) on a35-yard touchdown pass from Dakota Allen to Jordan Campbell with 12 second left in the final stanza. It gave the Warriors a 27-21 triumph.
Ram-a-lama defense: Trotwood Madison (4-1) is playing some pretty mean defense. The Rams have given up just 22 points at the midway point of the season. The defense has scored four less points than they have given up. Trotwood-Madison has 12 takeaways of which three have been returned for touchdowns. The most pints the Rams have they allowed was in their 10-6 loss to Troy in the opener. Since that defeat T-Mad has held opponents to a combine 5-45 on third down conversions (11.1%).
Calling on Kovacs: Springboro (3-2) wide receiver Nick Kovacs has had at least one touchdown reception in 15 consecutive games. He has found the end zone 26 times on 104 receptions for 1,558 yards, in that span.
Bellbro-ken: Thoughts of a perfect season for Bellbrook (4-1, 1-1) ended on Friday night. The Golden Eagles allowed 21 unanswered fourth quarter points as Eaton (2-3, 1-1) pulled off the upset. Things don’t get any easier for Bellbrook as Valley View (4-1, 0-1) and Franklin (5-0, 2-0) are next on the slate.
Wildcats roar in big games: Franklin has picked up some quality wins in the first half of the season. The combined record of their opponents thus far is 16-9 with five of those losses coming at the mercy of the Wildcats. They have handed Edgewood and Valley View their only defeats of the season.
That mad, Mad River: Central Buckeye Mad River division members Ben Logan and Indian Lake are sitting at 5-0. The other three member in the division are all 0-5. It appears everything will be on the line in Week 10 showdown between Ben Logan and Indian Lake. Both teams are on pace to be unbeaten on that final Friday of the regular season.
Blue in Bellefontaine: A young Bellefontaine (2-3) squad has lost three games this season. The Chieftains fee by three points to undefeated Wapakoneta, 4-1 Troy got them by five and unbeaten local rival Ben Logan took them down by seven. They do have a very solid six point win over Sidney (3-2).
