Roundup: Dayton – Week 6
- Updated: October 1, 2016
The strong have started to flex their muscles and begun to separate themselves from the pack. The top squads have started to string together a strand of wins and build their cases for the postseason. There will still be obstacles left to overcome in November but it is now becoming quite clear who the best of 2016 are.
Here is a look at Week 6 in the Gem City:
Warriors continue to show moxie: Lebanon (5-1, 1-0) has a never say die attitude this fall. The Warriors trailed Northmont (3-3, 0-1) 14-13 in the third quarter before reeling off 22 unanswered points in the game’s final 15 minutes. Quarterback Dakota Allen threw three touchdown passes (or more) for the seventh time in his career and went over 5,000 yards passing at the varsity level for the victors. It was the fifth straight win for Lebanon.
A new sidekick in Springfield: Teams can no longer focus their defensive attention against Springfield (4-2) solely on Danny Davis. Shane Ramey is emerging as a legitimate threat out of the Wildcats backfield. Ramey has combined to run for 339 yards on 33 carries with five rushing touchdowns the past two weeks. Friday night he posted 168 yards on 12 totes with three trips to the end zone as the ‘Cats took out Xenia (0-6).
It’s good to be back: After sitting out the first five games because of the OHSAA transfer rules, Jake Neatherton made his 2016 debut for Miamisburg (5-1) a smashing hit. Neatherton who starred for the past three seasons for Valley View wasted little time making his presence felt for the Vikings. He had touchdown runs of 47 and 67 yards and his lone reception, a 77-yard score all before halftime in the ‘Burgs win over Fairmont (0-6). Neatherton finished the game with five carries for 132 yards and three touchdowns on six touches.
Opportunity knocks: One player who has taken advantage of the void left by Neatherton at Valley View (5-1, 1-1) is Collin Genslinger. The Spartans junior ran for a career high 208 yards against Bellbrook (4-2, 1-2) on Friday night. He has run for at least one touchdown in nine consecutive games.
Bulldogs taking big bite out of foes: One of the most pleasant surprises heading into October has been the on field performance of Milton-Union (5-1, 3-0). The Division V Bulldogs warded off Madison Senior (4-2, 1-1) for their third straight conquest. Things don’t get any easier for the boys from West-Milton as they have games at Brookville (3-3, 1-2), at Carlisle (4-2, 3-0) and hosting Dixie (4-2, 2-0) up next on the docket.
A Dixie chico: Another team exceeding expectations from the SWBL is Dixie. The Greyhounds are getting great play out of a veteran senior class which includes Ethan Arnett. The running back had his second 200-plus yard, four rushing touchdown game of the season as Dixie pummeled Northridge (1-5, 0-3), 51-21. The Greyhounds have combined to score 111 points the past two weeks.
Wolverines making points: Dunbar (5-1, 3-0) shutout Meadowdale (2-4, 2-1), 46-0, for their third straight win. During that span the ‘Wolves have outscored their opponents by a combined 180-22. They have had offensive outputs of 56, 78 and 46 points.
Knights lighting up the scoreboard: Alter (6-0, 2-0) is a well-oiled offensive machine. They remain unbeaten after dismantling Roger Bacon (2-4, 0-3), 65-13. The Knights have now scored at least 49 points in five consecutive tilts.
