CovCath falls to Fern Creek
- Updated: November 18, 2016
Fern Creek scored three unanswered third-quarter touchdowns, which proved too much for Covington Catholic to overcome as the Colonels fell, 35-28 in a Class 5A state quarterfinal game on Friday.
The score was tied at 14 at halftime, but the Tigers punched in three TDs over a 6:12 span to open up a 21-point lead. Two of those scores came on runs and the third was a 61-yard punt return.
CovCath QB A.J. Mayer cut the deficit to 14 on a 7-yard run early in the fourth quarter, and a 13-yard rush by Sam Schuh made it 35-28 but the Colonels could not generate the equalizer.
Mayer finished 17-for-29 for 180 yards, and Casey McGinness rushed 11 times for 129 yards and a touchdown to pace the Colonels.
CovCath’s Jack Coldiron caught six passes for 80 yards.
