St. Xavier wins OT thriller vs. Sycamore
- Updated: November 19, 2016
Andrew Wittrock caught a 9-yard touchdown pass in overtime to lift St. Xavier to a 35-28 win over Sycamore in a regional final that featured a crazy fourth quarter on Friday.
The Bombers were down 14 heading into the final stanza, and even after they cut the lead to seven on a 4-yard Jacob Buerkle run and pinned the Aviators at their own 1, Ravon Bonner busted a 99-yard run to put Sycamore back up by 14.
But with 2:11 left, Sean Clifford scored on a 9-yard run to make it 28-21, and St. Xavier possessed an on-side kick. Two plays later, Clifford hooked up with Cameron Specht for a 34-yard touchdowns, the Bombers’ second score in 17 seconds to tie it.
St. Xavier went ahead in the extra session, and Bobby Jefferson came up with a crucial sack on the Aviators’ possession on third down. Sycamore threw an incompletion to end it.
Clifford went 19-for-27 for 229 yards and two touchdowns, and he rushed 21 times for 171 yards and two TDs. Specht had six catches for 86 yards and the clutch score late in the fourth quarter.
Bonner ran for 210 yards and three touchdowns, Jake Borman ended the night 13 of 22 for 192 yards and one TD and Jonathan Malek caught five passes for 102 yards to pace the Aviators.
It’s a fitting end of the season for Sycamore, which started the season 0-2 thanks to a pair of OT losses.
