Less than two weeks after the state finals and already more than a handful of schools in Southwest Ohio have vacancies at their head football coach position. Already this week we have had some big news with plenty more to come. We take a look at those programs who have posted job listings on the Ohio High School Athletic Association website (ohsaa.org) for those available coaching spots for 2017 season.
Two positions have been filled and they will impact the Eastern Cincinnati Conference immensely. Milford has hired long-time coaching stalwart, Tom Grippa. After a four year hiatus at the prep level finds himself back in high school where he has compiled a 174-99 record in 26 seasons. He spent the last four campaigns at Mount St. Joseph College where he was the offensive coordinator.
Amelia and Glen Este will consolidate to form West Clermont High School. The school board agreed the logical choice to start the Wolves program was Glen Este head coach, Nick Ayers. West Clermont will take over Glen Este’s spot in the ECC. They will be the largest school in the league, enrollment-wise and play at the Division I level.
A third ECC school Withrow will be seeking its third full-time head coach in the last four years. In not that not too distant past the Tigers program was a consistent winner behind Doc Gamble and then Jim Place.
There are 12 coveted jobs in the three Greater Catholic League divisions. The CGL Central saw three of its four schools go 1-6 this past fall and that has created two openings. Badin did not ask back alum Bill Tenore after an eight years. The Rams made the playoff five times under Tenore who compiled a 51-28 record at the school. Purcell Marian Athletic Director Kenny Pope confirmed with TriState Football that Jon Tobin “will not return” and left it at that. The Cavaliers have not made the playoffs since 2000.
To the west of Badin at Ross the 11-year relationship with Brian Butts has come to its literal end. Butts went 59-53 during his time at Ross however a 2-8 campaign in 2016 was too much for him to overcome.
The plan all along at Cincinnati Country Day was to have athletic director and head basketball coach Greg Ross to take the reins for one year while the school adjusted to the departure of long time front man Tim Dunn. The Indians went 5-5 for Ross who happily says, “we now have about 45 applicants for the position and are going to interview about eight guys.” Ross does plan on going back to being an assistant as he will jokingly tell the new coach that, “I will be his boss so he has no choice.”
There was an abrupt end to Jon Daniels run at Urbana. He coached the Hillclimbers to a pair of 2-8 finishes. The pride of Champaign County has to regroup and figure out how to get that Friday night magic back.
In the Greater Western Ohio Conference America South division also has a pair of schools in Xenia and West Carrollton that are headed in new directions. It’s tough to win at those schools. The athletes are there but the numbers and morale must be built up.
