Stoll Era Over At Turpin
- Updated: December 20, 2016
For the last 15 years Rob Stoll has manned the sidelines for Turpin. Monday, Stoll decided to step down as the head coach of the Spartans as he felt the demands of football were getting to be too much.
A graduate of Anderson High School and Georgetown College (KY), Stoll returned to the Forest Hills School District when board members and Turpin Athletic Director Tony Hemmelgarn and gave him his first head coaching opportunity after more than a decade as an assistant at several other schools. Stoll took to the job like a fish to water and his attention to detail made the program something special.
The start to Stoll’s career was rather inauspicious as the Spartans would go a combined 13-17 in his first three years at the helm. Then in 2005 things began to turn the corner as Turpin finished 7-3. It was their first winning campaign in seven seasons. The flood gates were open and winning became the norm on Bartels Road.
Stoll guided Turpin to its only Regional title and the Division II state semi-finals going 12-2 in ’06. It was the first of seven straight postseason appearances for the Spartans who had only been to the playoffs once before Stoll got there, back in ’95. From ’06 through ’12 Turpin had seasons of 12 wins three times, 11 wins once, nine victories twice and eight wins once. They lost just 13 contests in that seven year span.
Turpin has made the playoffs the last two years under Stoll who doesn’t leave the cupboard empty for his successor. The program is as solid as it has ever been having gone 21-3 since the start of ’15.
In his 15 seasons, Stoll comprised a 122-48 mark at Turpin making him the winningest coach in school history. Four times in his last 11 years the Spartans finished the regular season undefeated and six times in that span they won at least 10 games.
