All-TSF: Quarterback Primer
- Updated: January 3, 2017
Quarterbacks ruled the roost this past fall. It is a trend that doesn’t appear to be letting up any time, soon. There are 43 quarterback nominees up for the 2016 All-TriStateFootball.com team of which 17 will return for their schools in ’17. The seniors should be saluted just as well as many will leave their alma maters having rewritten the record books.
Here is a look at the quarterback nominee’s for the 2016 postseason All-TriStateFootball.com team:
NOMINEES: Reed Aichholz (Indian Hill); Dakota Allen (Lebanon); Josh Anderson (New Richmond); Seth Becker (Western Brown); Jake Borman (Sycamore); Brayden Burch (Beechwood); Sean Clifford (St. Xavier); Zairn Davis (Summit Country Day); Brian Erbe (Oakwood); Brady Evans (Wilmington); Cam Haynes (McNicholas); Matt Goodman (Norwood); Tristan Greene (Blanchester); Jonathan Hagerty (Franklin County); Eric Jackson (Hamilton); Alex Jacobs (Indian Lake); Chase Keller (Bishop Brossart); Tyler Knecht (Kings); Hayden Kotwica (Troy); Jerod Lonaker (Cooper); Dezmin Lyburtus (Bellefontaine); Brody Mahle (Springboro); Ryan Markoff (Alter); Andrew Marty (Wyoming); AJ Mayer (Covington Catholic); Rashad McKee (Wayne); Griffin Merritt (La Salle); Tanner Morgan (Ryle); Cameron Racke (Simon Kenton); Drew Reckart (Edgewood); Solomon Reed (Princeton); Brandon Shelton (Northwest); Markell Stephens-Peppers (Trotwood-Madison); Reid Strobl (Lawrenceburg); Jay Volpenhein (Anderson); Danny Vanatsky (CHCA); Braden White (Franklin); Tim Williams (Aiken); Trey Wilson (Benjamin Logan); Jacob Woycke (Oak Hills); Frankie Young (Harrison).
Back for an encore: Eight of our nominees were also nominated in 2015 – Aichholz, Allen, Clifford, Jacobs, Knecht, Morgan, Racke and Wilson.
State title game starters: Our list of nominees includes three quartebacks that have started on teams that have won state championship games – Clifford (’16), Merritt (’16) and Burch (’16). Strobl and Stephens-Peppers were the starters on teams that fell just short in the finale this past season. Only eight nominees have never played in a playoff game. Six of those players are underclassmen who will get another shot at the postseason next fall.
3,000-yard passing club: Four of our nominee’s had more than 3,000 yards passing. Volpenhein (3,541), Lonaker (3,222), Marty (3,202) and Young (3,024).
Tossing touchdowns: They were airing it out last fall with 13 of our nominee’s throwing at least 25 touchdown passes – Volpenhein (43), Marty (43), Wilson (33), Lonaker (32), Young (31). Vanatsky (30), Racke (29), Strobl (29), Becker (28), Jacobs (28), Mahle (27), Burch (26) and Aichholz (25).
1,000-yard runners: Six of our 43 quarterbacks ran for more than 1,000 yards – Jacobs (1,390), Goodman (1,216), Jackson (1,171), Anderson (1,165), Lyburtus (1,065) and Markoff (1,045). Anderson and Jacobs were the only signal callers on our list to have run for 20 touchdowns.
The 1,000/1,000 club: Five players on our list ran and threw for more than 1,000 yards in ’16 – Anderson (2,068 Pa, 1,165 Ru), Goodman (1,777 Pa, 1,216 Ru), Jackson (1,360 Pa, 1,171 Ru), Jacobs (1,893 PaYds, 1,390 Ru) and Lyburtus (1,263 Pa, 1,065 Ru). Anderson is the only player to have thrown for over 2,000 yards and run for more than 1,000 yards.
Committed: Several seniors are moving on to play at the next level. Here are those who have verbally committed to play in college. Clifford – Penn State; Marty – Northwestern; Morgan – Western Michigan; Racke – Wofford; Allen – Eastern Kentucky; Aichholz – Richmond.
See you in ‘17: Of the 43 nominees, 17 of them are underclassmen. There are 14 juniors – Becker, Burch, Erbe, Goodman, Lyburtus, Mayer, Merritt, Stephens-Peppers, Volpenhein, Vanatsky, White, Williams, Woycke and Young. There are two sophomore nominee’s – Anderson and McKee. There is one freshman – Evans. Last season only eight underclassmen were on the list at quarterback.
A freshman year to remember: Wilmington fans have a ton to look forward to over the next three seasons as Evans is the only freshman nominated for the 2016 All-TSF team out of 478 total players. The Class of 2020 member adapted to the varsity level with flying colors throwing for 2,055 yards, running for 235 yards while accounting for 25 touchdowns (21 passing, four rushing) for the 7-3 Canes.
Morgan’s legacy: Morgan finishes his career in the Kentucky Top 10 all-time in passing yards (10,303) and in the Top 20 in passing touchdowns (104). He transferred to Ryle in ’15 after playing his first two years at Hazard.
