Schedule Sneak Peek: Winton Woods
- Updated: April 16, 2017
Being an independent has its good and bad when it comes to scheduling. Winton Woods finds itself in the crosshairs of that dilemma. The one thing coaches try to avoid is overscheduling but when you are an independent that is unavoidable. It has led to a three year absence from the postseason for the program after a run of eight playoff appearances from 2005-13 including winning the Division II state title in ’09.
A killer schedule for the Division II Warriors will see them take on three GCL South squads including state champion, La Salle. The Warriors haven’t solved the Lancers going 0-3 with an average margin of loss of 18.3 points over the past three campaigns. Perhaps their fortunes change like they did against Elder. This will be the sixth straight season that Winton Woods and Elder have faced off. The Panthers won the first three but the Warriors have been victorious the past two years.
Also on the slate are Ohio Division V state champion Canton Central Catholic and Ohio Division III regional champion Columbus DeSales. A pair of GWOC West squads Springboro and Northmont are back this fall. Winton Woods lost to both of those Division I schools a year ago.
Here is a look at the 2017 Winton Woods schedule:
Fri – 08/25/17 – NORTHMONT – 7:00 PM
Fri – 09/01/17 – @West Clermont – 7:00 PM
Fri – 09/08/17 – @Springboro – 7:00PM
Sat – 09/16/17 – ROYAL IMPERIAL ACADEMY (CAN) – 2:00PM
Fri – 09/22/17 – @La Salle – 7:00PM
Fri – 09/29/17 – @Bishop Chatard – 7:00PM
Fri – 10/06/17 – @Canton Central Catholic – 7:00PM
Fri – 10/13/17 – ELDER – 7:00PM
Fri – 10/20/17 – @Columbus DeSales – 7:00PM
Fri – 10/27/17 – MOELLER – 7:00PM
FINAL TAKE
The last six games on the schedule are versus catholic schools. Athletic Director David Lumpkin summed it up best, “Welcome to Bishop Winton Woods.” It is imperative that the Warriors go into that stretch at 4-0 if they want to make the playoffs. The lofty schedule is loaded with potentially large Harbin Point grabs. A 6-4 record will in all likelihood will get Winton Woods into the postseason after a three year hiatus.
