An evening of St. X-cellence
- Updated: September 23, 2017
CINCINNATI, ohio – The St. Xavier Bombers made a statement Friday night with a resounding win at GCL South rival, Moeller. Offense, defense, special teams, St. Xavier showed that it is the complete package. The Bombers victory was their 11th straight dating back to last season.
Things started off great for the host Crusaders. Moeller jumped out to an early lead when junior Miles McBride hit Jack McCracken for a 28-yard touchdown pass less than five minutes into the contest. Little did Moeller fans know it would be the lone highlight of the affair for the home team.
The prosperity and lead for the Crusaders would last all of 15 seconds. St. Xavier junior wide receiver Jared Kreimer returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. It was the first of 30 unanswered points to close out the game for St. Xavier.
Everyone pitched in for the Bombers. Senior quarterback Chase Wolf made play-after-play finishing with 202 yards and a touchdown passing. “He’s the best I’ve ever had (at the position)” head coach Steve Specht said of his Wisconsin-bound signal caller.
Wolf’s classmate, Matthew Fox set the tone for the Bombers offense with his hard running. He ran for 116 yards, had three receptions for 45 yards and found the end zone twice. The hounds of fall (Wolf and Fox) preyed on Big Moe.
On the other side of the ball, St. Xavier clamped down holding Crusaders to 188 yards of total offense on the night. Many of those came in the first half. It got harder and harder for Moeller to move the ball as the game wore on.
It was the third straight game that St. Xavier held its opponent to seven points. They are allowing just 10.4 points per game.
When the final ticks came off the clock it was obvious that reigning Division I state champion St. Xavier has all the pieces to defend its title. “This is really great group of seniors. They get along so well,” Specht said. It is their leadership that sets them apart from other class that the head coach has had in the past. With three state championships in 13 seasons under Specht’s tutelage those words are very high praise for this group of Bombers.
The Bombers Class of 2018 isn’t going to sit on its laurels. They are determined to get even better. That is a scary thought if you are one of the foes still on St. Xavier’s schedule.
